I just acquired a 1988 M3 and we're planning to replace the factory suspension. I've read about several options but haven't ridden in any of the cars modified with them. I plan to use the car as a driver (not daily driver, but not a show car either). I'd like a decent ride height (roads where I live are terrible) and a moderately comfortable rebound and compression. I've seen a lot of owners going the Bilstein/H&R springs route. That seems pretty popular. Has anyone had any experience with this suspension and what would you recommend? TIA

the m3 came with a billy and h&r set up from factory. it's equivalent to the h&r/billy sport set up, the shocks can be rebuilt if going for period correct restoration. h&r/billies is the e30 bible go to, there is a multitude of other choices if you delve into it, including shock and springs or coilover setups.
koni yellows are often paired with h&r or eibach for a slightly more friendly street ride in a similar package. -
M3's came with slightly stiffer/lower springs and low pressure Boge gas shocks. They are now known as Sachs advantage I believe. Anyway, people have been going Eibach/H&R and Bilstein/Koni for decades. There are pros and cons for every setup depending on what you like. If you just want a slightly lower /stiffer setup than stock...then H&R sport and Bilsteins are excellent without too much compromise. I've used H&R Sport + Bilstein in a two different cars (E30/E36).
Next round I'm going with Konis for the E30, as I think the Billys are overdamped for the softer spring rates of the H&R Sport.
I did try H&R Sport + Koni on an E36 328i and I was happy with how it rode.
I also like some thicker swaybars to help with the additional body roll you get with the softer Sport springs.Comment

Looks like I’ve got several options and that’s good! I’ve recently found an entire suspension system rebuilding kit that includes the following setup:
