Agreed. We put new Tourings on the 87 4dr along with H&R ix springs (got a great deal on a lightly used set from a forum member). Slight drop, great dd ride that's a couple notches better than new stock.

I'm really liking the E30 M3 springs that I put in the red car.

I'd generally be inclined to go with the Bilsteins. They are a nice damper for normal applications.

H&R Races are not my first recommendation. If you want to run springs that stiff, you really probably ought to be running a coilover setup of some sort, and they lower the car fairly aggressively.

Finally got the H&R Sport + Bilstein Sport combo on today.

                It's just what I wanted.
A little lower, still very comfortable on torn up roads.
                Feels planted in the corners.

A set of heavier sways is on the wishlist though, should help with bodyroll.

                  Hey guys.

So I still love the way this setup drives (H&R Sports, Bilstein Sports), even on the torn up roads around here it soaks up the bumps. But, I find myself looking at the car and wishing it was just a little lower.

I don't want to completely remove the spring pads, as I don't imagine metal-to-metal contact will be good for the suspension parts.

                  • Is it possible to get thinner spring pads front and rear?
                  • What's the consensus on E90 drop hats?
                    • Will I run into bottoming issues? (The sport fronts are 180lb/in.)

Here is how the H&R Sports sit. They've had a few thousand km to settle.

you can get e90 drop hats for the fronts. that will lower it a little. i dont not like the ride w/o pads. it makes a clunking noise over bumps.

were the HR sports you got for a vert or coupe? they look higher than id expect.
                    Much wow

AFAIK they are coupe springs. They are higher then I expected as well.

At least they are even front to rear.
That's partially due to me pulling 87lbs out of the trunk (Trunk tar and spare wheel)
Rear is going to be a little higher, at least on the passenger side, when I get my lightweight battery setup in there. (Should take almost 40lbs off that corner)

                      EDIT:
Here are some lighter pictures, you can see the wheel spacing a lot better.
Stock size tires on 14" weaves. 15mm wheel spacers in the rear.

After some reading, it looks like the E90 drop hats work with a little modification.
The oblong edge needs to be ground down so it doesn't rub the strut tower, and the center pressed in piece needs to be punched out.

And ensure the original washer and bearing cap are reused when installing.

                        Have I got that right?

Also, any sources for thinner spring pads?

As long as you modify the drop hats you should be fine. Overall I think people are split on using them or not. IE makes them but not sure if they are copies or modified as you plan to do.

I decided not to use them on my vert and dont regret it since I like to drive the canyons every now and then. In the back however I want to get thicker pads.

I currently have 5mm pads. Check pelican parts for the thin ones. Before that you might want to confirm what springs you have b/c it does look a little high.

Here's my clearance for some reference 5mm pads all around:

                          Back clearance

Also keep in mind I have a late model with shorter arches in the rear. Also my tire+wheel sizes are near equivalent to the overall diameter of the stock tire+wheel. Despite the negative gap, rubbing only occurs with passenger, or a very deep bump.

                          Front gap

                          Hope this helps.

I checked the number on my springs before I installed, and they all have "50406" on them.

those look like the OE sport springs. not the HR sports. HR sports are dark grey metallic.

I have contacted Turner Motorsport who I purchased them from, and asked them to clairify if these are the regular or OE Sport springs.

The product description page lists the package (springs and dampers) I bought as having H&R Sport springs.

I'll update the thread when I hear back from them.
