H&R Race springs feel soft to me

After reading a bunch of threads about E30 suspension, and considering my car came with Bilsteins already installed, I decided the H&R race springs (50404-88 ) would be a good fit. I just installed them this weekend along with new LCAs, E36 m3 lollipop bushings and new tie rod ends. I'm running Yokohama S Drive tires (205/50/16) and I have an unknown front swaybar (it's red) and what I assume is a suspention techniques (neon green) rear sway.

To me, the suspension does not feel particularly stiff. They are listed as 315f/570r on various forums (who knows how accurate that is), but - from my highly scientific test of bouncing on the rocker with the door open - they don't feel that stiff to me. Granted they are progressive, but there's a lot more deflection than I was anticipating. There's also more body roll during driving than I was expecting.

My basis of comparisson was my CRX on 250f/350r linear CG coilovers which weighed ~1900lb wet. That car felt much stiffer (and harsher) than my E30.

All said, I think it's a fantastic setup for the street, it's a little stiffer than the Eibach Pro-Kit springs that were on the car when I got it (they sucked, don't buy them) and the car is comfortable to drive on the road, I was just hoping for a slighly stiffer ride. I just wanted to make sure that my assessment wasn't indicating there's a problem with the car. I drove it hard in the parking lot to bed the brakes and nothing felt off. Possible my Bilsteins are either shot or just way under damped for this application?

I feel that the front end is stiff enough on my H&r race springs, though the previous owner cut a coil off the front so that most likely has stiffened it a little bit (assuming my working understanding of springs is correct). My real issue is the rear end does not seem stiff at all, especially considering ive got 650lb springs in my xr4ti rear and it doesn't move at all when i press on the bumper (only movement is the tire flexing) I know the H&r arent as stiff but my 318i is also about 400lbs lighter then my xr.

It took me a while to get used to the rear being bouncier but now that I expect it i find the handling great for the street. Plus i got them second hand so I only spent 180 on the set.

First thing I want to point out is H&R Race springs are designed for the E30 M3 but yes they fit other models. As you said, these are progressive which makes them great for the street but stiff enough for spirited driving. It's not fair to compare a CRX that is almost 1000lbs lighter with linear race springs and a true rear coilover setup to an E30 with H&R progressive race springs. The next step would be Turner's J Stock springs or GC coilovers or equivalent.
"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

Okay, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't crazy. Everyone here says the H&R Race setup is "really stiff" or "too stiff for the street" which now seems completely ridiculous to me. I'm perfectly happy with the suspension for street use, but I'm guessing once the car makes a dive toward full race car I'll have to change.

edit: Would it help make the car feel more planted to get the Bilsteins revalved? The ones I have now are the longer HD (I think) ones but if I remember correctly the HD and Sport have the same valving, just different lengths. Overall travel should be sufficient with either from what I've seen.

Nice I was planning on purchasing a set of H&R race as well. My car came equipped with Bilsteins and Racing Dynamics spring. The problem is I don't know if the Bilsteins on my car are HD or Sports. Does anyone know the actual lengths of each or if there is a part number stamped anywhere on the shock? The stickers with the model number have peeled off when I bought the car from PO and he isn't sure which model he has. This is for a 318is if it makes any difference.

Got rid of my H&R Race/billy setup because I found it soft in the front on my 325iS.

Running 450/650 GE coils, Konis, and GC mounts/plates and I think it is much better.

How do those two setups compare in terms of ride quality?
