First let's get one variable out of the way: What are the specs of the wheels these tires are going on? This way I can tell you if 225's will work.
That said, 215/45/16 is an oddball size. The tires available are either way too aggressive to meet your tread life expectancy, or just plain mediocre overall (Dunlop DZ101, Toyo T1-R).
If we discover that you can run 225/45/16 safely, there are some excellent choices, the closest to suiting your criteria being the Falken FK-452. It actually excels in all 5 categories mentioned.
So let me know the wheel spec, then we can go from there.

Excellent, excellent, excellent tire. Still no RT-615 for hard driving, but a better sidewall than the 512's. It's now the highest-rated all-season tire made (Consumer Reports). Still crappy in the snow, but all all-seasons are.

Just installed some new tires last week.
Yokohama S.Drive
205/55/15
$100 each from Discount Tire Direct with free shipping
Put about 500km on them so far, and I'm very happy. Second day they were on, I went on a drive with the local club guys. Some high speed driving, twisty sections, etc. I truly put them to the test, and they passed! Quiet, smooth, comfortable, and sticky as hell.
The night I installed them, it was kinda cold, and felt like snow was coming. Next morning, sure enough, there was snow on the ground, albeit very wet and slushy. I live at the bottom of a steep hill, and was worried they wouldn't get me to the shop. I was pleasantly surprised. They're no snow tire of course, but considering they are summer tires, they performed as well as most all seasons I've driven on.
Since then, I've had a chance to blast through some freeway ramps, and couldn't be happier. Very predictable, and sticky. I can now put this car into places the former all season 14's wouldn't go.
If I could ask for 1 slight improvement, it would be quicker turn in response. They seem to lag a tiny bit behind my input. COuld be that they are brand new still though. I'll see how it gets when they wear in a little more.

I'm still on some 195/65R14 Bridgestone Potenza RE950's that I put on some time in early-mid '05. Unfortunately theyre NLA in that size or I'd buy them again. I should have had them flipped but never did, so they're due for replacement. I have a little bit of tread left on the outside but the innermost tread block is smooth all the way around. Still no real hydroplaning to speak of though. Very effective tread design. I drive quickly and they're also very forgiving tires. Not overly grippy but not junk either. I think I'm going to stay with Potenza's and get the RE960AS's in 195 60 14. I'm kinda looking into it now though since they're a little undersized.Comment

i think i may have posted earlier, but the last set of tires i had were potenza re950s. like you said their grip isnt out of this world, but they gave me great performance and no noise for 60,000 miles.I'm still on some 195/65R14 Bridgestone Potenza RE950's that I put on some time in early-mid '05. The RE960 is actually rated pretty low in its class now (placed 12th out of 15 tires). The Falken ZE-912 dominated the rankings, try them.I'm still on some 195/65R14 Bridgestone Potenza RE950's that I put on some time in early-mid '05. I just mounted some kumho solus kr21's (195 65 14's) on my 318i, along with some bilstein touring shocks
I had some shocks from venezuela and some really (at least 5 years) old, crusty toyos on there. Ugh. Not good in a city full of rough streets... will report soonNot that I care, of course.

I have a set of style 135 17x8 wheels with a e36 5lug conversion. I’m thinking of running 245/35/17 Toyo Proxes T1s The car is geared mostly towards track use so I want the widest tire possible. I've heard of people running 245’s but I'm not sure how much modification is required or how much steering loss to expect. Any first hand experience?
