didnt even know that there was a glass roof option for an e30, so I assume they are rare. Any value in todays market? Any way to tell if its OEM vs. aftermarket? ran the vin of the car and it didnt have any details regarding glass roof, so Im assuming it was installed after the car was built. Thanks in advance.

The moon roof (glass sunroof) was a dealer-installed option. It's OEM, but the car never left the factory with it. Along with the glass moonroof, the car would also have a privacy slider so the sun can be blocked out.
I've got one, although it needs some repairs. It's pretty cool to drive around and get some light into the car from the roof and be able to see outside. And yeah, they're expensive because they're rare and very difficult to purchase. Mine is the only one I've ever seen in person.sigpic

My buddy had two. One we installed in a ‘91 318i he later sold, and the other I think he’s holding on to for his Touring in paint. They’re kinda neat I guess. But not a deal breaker since EVERY car nowadays has them (my wife’s A3, my Ford Flex..etc) Only suggestion I can make is replace EVERYTHING when you install one: new cables, seals..etc. if you don’t you’ll get leaks. It wasn’t fun having water pour in your lap when you hit the brakes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1991 325i MT2 Touring (JDM bro)

It's just one of those nice accessories that few people have. To me, it's like the convertible hard top, a factory accessory that wasn't needed but nice to have. These days such parts command a premium from those who really want them."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

yeah, I don't think having the glass roof makes an E30 worth more on it's own. $6100 for a rusty 318 definitely doesn't sound like a good deal, but the market for everything "vintage" is basically insane. If I didn't already own an E30 I probably would never be able to buy one now (that isn't a total pile).

It should be said that there are also some aftermarket Webasto units running around for whatever reason, but I think those probably hurt value, and it's generally very clear that they are not stock.

I’ve ran into 3 hunting for parts. Each was in the range of 800$ in the past 2 years. One had either Volvo, or Saab printed on it. Idk if it was legit. I’ve seen 2 more outside of that. One was just on a regular e30 a guy had. Another was on an at a car show, and the guy said he traded his carbon fiber one for it.
