i work with led elsewhere and we find even 4500k is bit too blue for most folk. 3500 to 4000k is the preferred range. we do use a fair bit of 4000 to 5500K for mid height. it gets insanely blue for high bay - a lot of 6500k. most folk like something warmer in the lower stuff.

that's considered quite warm. 2700 - 3500k is the range i target flower bias grow lights. it's the same as mid through late summer light. 4000 - 4500 is the range targeted for veg bias and it's really blue at the upper. it's equivalent to spring thru early summer light.

I've got US Ellipsoids in my E30, and was running with an eBay 4300k 35W HID kit for a few years. I can tell you the colour temperature is way off with these eBay kits, this was easily in the 5000-6000k range. I have also had at least one ballast fail.
Light output was way better then sealed beams, but still left a lot to be desired.
I have a set of 50w Morimoto XB Ballasts and 9006 XB 5000K HID Bulbs waiting in storage to try out next.
A test firing showed these are between 4300k-5000k. No blue light at all.
I am using some LED Highbeam Lamps - Aukee 5000lm 6000k (6x CSP Diodes) which are quite a bit brighter then the halogen and haven't failed yet. (However they are too blue for my taste)

LED Highbeams vs Halogen. Note the distinct lines vertical lines in the beam pattern caused by the lens fluting.

You can see the whole inside of the house from the street, and they're super "white". I don't think they ever turn them off either. It gives me a headache just thinking about it!
