Is this normal for e30s to have door to quarter window trim misaligned like this? There is no more room at quarter panel trip slotted holes to push the whole thing any lower. Door was aligned to rear quarter panel (no trim was installed) and it's perfect there. Only the top trim and the lower window sill trim are off. Is it common or there is some trick to this?

no its not normal. your door alignment is screwed. . for a 40ish yr old car it's probably pretty good lol. -
Lots of adjustments to be made via the hinges. but it can be alot of screwing around, seems easy until you try and all of a sudden the door doesn't close hah.Comment

door is perfectly alight as far as the fender and the rear quarter panel is. I didn't take the fender pic put you can see its in line with the rear quarter. Gaps are all even. If I align mouldings, the door won't be aligned to panels. Hence my question for some special trick to get this doneComment

b pillar trim snaps in only one spot (slots on the door frame dictate its position). The same for the door frame moulding.. It just snaps in with no adjustment. I can possibly try removing rear quarter window again and it's trim, remove rivets and reposition it but it was never disassembled after BMW had its hands on it so not sure I want to mess with it. I just wasn't sure if it's normal. I looked at some pics of all original E30s for sale on BaT and it looks like that trim alignment is hit and miss. The chrome / silver trim at the base of the window can at least be nudged upward to align with the other trim. I recently removed and replaced mine. There is a bit of wiggle room to slide it up or down using plastic trim tools (and patience). I made a post about it here:
