Has anyone added a sunroof to their car that did not come with one?
It is still going to be less work then swaping all my parts into a sunroof car. I would end up swaping my headliner and cut the hole in it any way because it is too hard to find cars with black headliners.

This is the price to pay to do it right. And you can paint the headliner black. If your serious about taking a can opener to that rare car...go all the way...California top is the way to do it. The fully retractable canvas type.
Let him do it, then wait for his thread in 4 months when it starts to rain when he complains and bitches about how it leaks.

The local E30 PRO-3 guys are all over non-sunroof cars. We have to take sunroof, and all the associated tracks and brackets out, both to reduce weight, and to fit the roll cage tighter to the roof. Then we have to weld in a seal shut the opening. Extra steps that just add to the build process.
Is this an M20 car or M42?
To answer your question, to try to retrofit a factory sunroof would take a lot of work. There's a lot of tracks, runners, motors, etc to install above that headliner. And every time I pull a headliner out of a parts car, I wonder how the heck BMW fit them in. Very fragile and sort of tough to secure at the edges. I would have hated to be Franz on the BMW assembly line putting in headliners. Putting headlight buckets in would be a lot easier on the back. LOL.
