I just sent an e-mail to the Georgia Clean Air Resources Board about the matter. Hopefully they will get back with me soon.

Anyone in Europe know how much the M51 E34 525tds engines are going for on the second hand market?

Just get an old Rabbit Diesel. They're fun when the valve guides and seals are worn out, you can't turn the car off from all the oil getting into the the chamber. You just have to run it into a wall or tree or something.

There's no stop lever in the engine compartment?

We won't see newer BMW diesels until at least 2006 maybe 2007. It sucks as the new M-technik 5er 530d is a awesome car. Our money hungry refinery's just won't convert to cleaner burning fuel due to they will lose a few buck in change over.

Diesel will sell more with less particle emissions and soot. Shame.

Word, i was actually discussing that with my girlfriend last night. We were behind some old Montero that was dumping a crapload of smoke (and we're in cabrio). Then I went into an explanation about the diesel quality and sulfur content and blah blah blah..

The final conclusion was: in the states, no diesel because the actual diesel itself sucks causing cars to smog everyone. Here, plenty of good diesel but no one maintains their friggin buckets and everyone gets smogged as well. In conclusion.. we're all fucked lol.

Looking at the website http://www.cleanairforce.com/engine.htm on emissions regulations in Georgia I see the following:

"Diesel posered vehicles that have been converted to operate on gasoline must meet the emissions standards and applicable emission control equipment for the year, make, model of its equivalent gasoline vehicle's body and chassis. Simply put, a diesel-to-gasoline conversion is legal if the gasoline engine used was originally available from the original auto manufacture in the same year body/chassis as the diesel engine."

There was no mention of a gasoline to diesel conversion so I take it that it would be the same requirements for the reverse procedure. I take that to mean that I can swap a diesel engine into a previously gas powered car as long as a diesel was originally offered by the manufacturer in that particular chassis. Also I must use a engine from the same model year or newer. In my case I was going to use the engine from a E34 525tds in a E28. I am assuming that all of this would be legal if I did actually go through with it and it passed emissions requirements.

it's probably the other way around... since(in general) a diesel has more partical polutiant than gas, they probably don't even mention it becuase your not allowed to do it.

I'll paypal you a dollar if I'm wrong

I am here in germany and havent really seen any diesels for sale-- but havent been looking either. I have a E46 320d touring that my wife drives, and I think its an OK motor. Its very underpowered, and has more turbo lag than anything i have ever driven, but the fuel economy, and the options in the car kinda make up for it. if i could do it all again, I would not have gotten the 4cyl. it would have been the 330d!! fo sure. so overall, i think the motor sux! but i gotta live with it.

-the M41 is a 1.676cc engine that's sounds like an old lawnmower and don't even know torque

-advantages of the M41; great MPG, relative reliable for ECE norms

                          E46 320d was the M47 engine IIRC

It is at least newer than the M21 diesels I can get a hold of here in the States. According to bimmerforums guide the M41 was available from 1995 on.

The M51 would be nice but at around $3300 U.S. it would be tough to decide. Has anyone ever driven a M41 or M51 powered car?

Driven both cars, M41 is nice for urban traffic not more not less otherwise the M51 drives great for a non- Common-Rail diesel, the gasoil burner has a great torque on low revs ( compare it with an modded eta engine )and the 24valves dieselsound is smooth as hell

M21 and M41 smoothness is +- the same
