I disagree on the good design. The crappy timing chain system that has a tendancy to grenade and profile gasket are two pretty big strikes against it, plus the inner oil pan bolts falling off and blocking the oil pump and the ungodly nightmare of vacuum hoses under the intake manifold.

hmm... i haven't had any of those issues.

        Ask yourself these two questions:
How often do you hear of a bad timing system ruining a m42 motor?
How often do you hear of a timing belt breaking on a m20 motor?

          Then ask youself this question:

Who lets their timing belt snap? noobs? Lol m20 ftw.

I have one, and couldn't agree more. Gotta make sure to drop the pan and put some locktite on those bolts. As for the crazy cooling/vac hoses under the intake, all that can be deleted.

How often you "hear" something is highly subjective.

How many more M20 engined E30s were sold compared to M42's?

I strongly disagree. I have tried both 3.64 and 3.73 and both returned worse mileage than 4.10 gears. The M42 simply does not have enough torque to go lugging around in the lower revs. 3500-4000 rpm on the highway IS NOT A BAD THING.

I will say the 3.73 make the car a bit more fun in 1st and 2nd gears, but everywhere else it sucks.

Your right, they were very subjective questions but still, I would put money down that the percentage of m20's that break down due to timing failure is greater than m42's.

And what percentage of that would be due to owners neglecting proper maintenance?

We've all heard plenty of M20 t-belt horror stories, they all usually end with "I really should have replaced the timing belt but I didn't."

And I'd be willing to bet that an extremely large percentage of those failures are due to irresponsible owners telling themselves they'll get around to swapping belts, or not knowing shit about the car in the first place. I mean, stupid people are in an abundance. Proper maintenance is common sense yet I have yet to hear a story about a snapped belt that wasn't the owners fault in some way.

That having been said if you like e30s and have any schooling past the 2nd grade the m20 is for you. :pimp:

ouch... this is very true :) but having to change a timing belt every 50K is part of the design of the m20 motor. if you buy a m20 the first thing you should always do is change the t-belt just for piece of mind right? that is maintenance i can live without.

Just to be clear. i love m20's i just hate when people name a few minor flaws in the m42 and then call it a piece of shit. Motors are like people no one is perfect.
