Such a nice ride, my Friend owns a VW oriented shop here just picked up an S4 like this and it is totally legit.
OP this is my suggestion if not a B5 S4.

Yes the 04+ are more but, you can get previous years with turbos, just not the same engine as an sti. 04+ same engine different turbo. 03 and back, differenet engines with a turbo option.

Which year and trim are you referring to? As far as the specs are concerned on Edmunds, all foresters pre 04 were non turbo H4 motors.

According to wiki also, the only 98-03 foresters that came with turbos were for the JPN and AUS markets.

you might be able to find a mazdaspeed6 under 10k. maybe.

awd, turbocharged. 273hp. with an accessport (comes pretuned) that will make 300whp easily.

Audis Torsen equipped cars eat snow like no other on the road. Look at old Quattro coupes, the 200, that S4, or some B6 A4s. They can be had for about 10 grand now.

Would you rather drive it or figure out why some stupid electrical problem won't go away?

Those b5s have pretty bad reps, now I've never owned one but the rep has to come from somewhere.

1.8T and 2.0T's eat turbos and are seriously having sludge issues. I have heard of too many blown engines in the last 4 years in my local area.

I'm not a huge fan of Japanese but would consider a scooby and just do the HG's when they die.

I just purchased an Audi allroad 2.7T 6spd. Pick it up on the 12th down in AZ.

I too am coming from a Volvo, but FWD T5. Nothing wrong with mine, I just wanted more tuning options and AWD.

I'm aware, and I'm sure you are too, of the maintenance involved in the 2.7T engine, but I turn my own wrenches are am not intimidated. When the air suspension goes out you can bolt in A6 coilovers along with a handful of OEM A6 suspension parts for a full conversion from air. A full kit including a bypass module for the air system runs around $1,900, which is on par for most high end coilover kits.

Just so you know, There is a huge difference in quality between a GC8 (2.5 RS) and the 2002 on WRX in build quality and body stiffness. I love the GC8, it's a very fun car. The diff ratio makes it feel a lot quicker than it is. However it's a wet noodle of a chassis. I think when the 2002 Impreza came out they said it was 300 times as stiff. The WRX is the way to go. The EJ 20 is a lot better than the 2.5 in durability and of course performance.

I sold my MINT, stock, 2002 WRX with snows on the factory wheels, and 17" BBS with Pol Positions on em for 8500.

I drove a new-ish (like 05-06) Subie Forester XT with a 5-speed. I was working on it and need to diagnose a "odd enigne noise when accelerating"

Well, it was just the sound of an H4 at WOT (sounds like a misfire lol), but dear god that thing hauled. I don't know what the specs are on the low-boost EJ25, but it would roll all over my e30, that's for damn sure. The good under-body clearance and AWD would make it PERFECT for winter DD and the power/fun would be a huge plus.

I don't know what you could find one for, money-wise, but they are great machines and the EJ20/25 did not have nearly the same HG isuses that the earlier Subies have. I bet that over a year of ownership, spending a couple grand more on the Forester up front will be cheaper than any VW/Audi peice of crap.

I'm of the same mentality. I rather buy a car based on the performance then the maintenance.

Those B5 S4 avants move. Especially with a flash.

On another note I test drove an 02 WRX with a flash this weekend. Pulled out of the lot, hard in first and second, then grenaded the diff and had to limp it back ...
