I was waiting for someone to chime in with Stahwille (we say it staw-willie at my uncle's shop).
I think if you can hold the tools in your hand you can get a good feel for the quality level. I think it is wise to pick and choose different tools from different makers, instead of being a brand nazi just to have them all match. My uncle has been a mechanic for 25+ years and his box is a real mutt!
Totally agreed on a few points here:
-Snap-On is mostly top notch, but on their trucks they can carry some real garbage too
-Craftsman "normal" box wrenches are too short and fatiguing, and their ratchets eat a dick
-Kobalt has some neat stuff if you pick through the selection (some American, some overseas made)
-Channel Lock has great pliers of all kinds, higher priced but not too bad and I think they are mostly American made
-Klein electrical stuff seems great (German made no?)
Beware of gimmicks and anything only labeled with "CHROME VANADIUM" lol.

Anyone got gripes about Knipex? Lowes has great prices on it, but it isn't in the tool corral, it is in electrical.
