i would drive my cabbie to cali today if i had money for gas, the coupe needs more of the neglected maintenance done before i trust it.

At this point, I drive it about 100m and that's about as far as I want to go just in case something does happen, but then again I'm still working on tuning it and the turbo setup only has a few hundred miles under it's belt....still have a few bugs to work out. Once I flush coolant this weekend and maybe do an oil change I'll feel better, just because I want to make sure the hg isn't leaking.

I'd take it just about anywhere once I get an actual new battery, and a diff bushing.

I drive my car constantly on several thousand mile trips without issue on a normal basis.

Melbourne to NJ and back is not a problem in the 318is. I always have a basic ratchet set and some spare oil and coolant for long trips though.

I bought a 325e in Austin earlier this year sight unseen and drove it back to Melbourne. The car wasn't maintained at all but it made the trip with a few stops along the way due to a shitty fuel pump. Once it sat for a bit and cooled, it fired right back up and drove for a few more hours. These cars are fucking tough.

When it's over 110F, my car is very uncomfortable going more that a mile and a half or so, when the interior heats up like a pizza oven. This sucks as the E30 is my daily driver, and it's over 110F for four months here.

I realize this isn't what the PO meant, but it's still true.

SUV's are so much better for road trips IMHO.

The best cars for long dist. road trips are full size american cars. Sure they don't handle nearly as well, but if you want something comfy, that's up to date with fantastic MPG's and reliable, you can;t go wrong with something like a Chev Impala, or Ford Taurus. Sure the v6 engine's are bigger than our inline 6's, but they get better mileage and obviously more powerful from being FWD.

                            sorry for geting off topic.

In regards to the OP, I just finished a 13 hour road trip from Calgary, AB to Vancouver BC and my 30 never missed a beat! I wasnt' suprised as i have kept it up with maint and the body isn't rusty either. Funny thing was, after I finished the trip, the car felt like it could keep going. I recall road trips in my dads old Volvo wagons and after finishing a trek like that you'd feel tired. With the e30 this wasnt' the case, even though the e30 is older in age than the Volvo, it is just engineered that much better.

You always go wrong with an Impala, especially the new ones.

just finished a 3500+ miles trip in my e30 from Cali to DC and no problem. Fun as hell when your on the open road and the e30 handles awesome in corners.
