This kind of s*** pisses me off.
Absolutely do NOTgive in to this guy!!!!
if you EVER buy a car from CL, it is ALWAYS an AS-IS sale, NO warranty expressed or implied.
If for example the guy has just handed you the cash, and you and he just signed the bill of sale and title, and the car spontaneously exploded and burned to a molten blob, you ABSOLUTELY do NOT need to reimburse him a penny, instead, you need to demand that he IMMEDIATELY remove his molten blob off your property, and you have EVERY right to do so.
If you disclosed all known faults with the car before the purchase, and he willingly bought it, and signed all paperwork, then he cannot demand ANYTHING from you for ANYTHING that happens after that, unless you are directly involved (i.e. you t-bone him later at an intersection).
I agree with wanting to be polite, but there is NO need to be polite and give in to someone who is obviously over-stepping his bounds. I would politely remind him that the sale was final, as is standard practice for ANY sale on CL, you disclosed all known problems, you withheld nothing, and you have no legal ties to this car anymore, and if he so much as ATTEMPTS to collect any money from you, you will call the cops, and you have all the legal papers that put you in the right.Comment

tell him there were people who would've bought it for a thousand, and not bitched one bit when it broke down.... is it currently running motronic 1.3?
ask him if he would have trusted a ford escort of the same year/price/condition.Comment

maybe you could go on a tv court show and use your 15 minutes of fame to settle this! haha
In all seriousness though, I agree with everyone here, be respectful but firm about the sale being as is, and leave it at that.
This reminds me of when my dad sold his ski boat when I was a kid. He was heartbroken to do it, but had to, and it was in perfect running order when it left the driveway. The next day the guy is back because he overheated it and blew the headgasket asking for his money back. People suck sometimes.sigpicComment

he cant do anything. if you had him sign something saying "sold as is" then you are protected from a recourse. He should have looked it over more thoroughly and for 650$ what do you expect?Comment

So I guess I am way nicer than all of you, I care about leaving transactions with anyone on good terms. So I offered to give the guy $150 for the tow he had to get and for parts needed to go into it. I also told him that I bought the parts I gave him at a from a friend discount for $250 so he can get a lot more for them and if he posted them here they would sell within a week. He said he will think about it... What is there to think about here really?

Crazy story. When I bought my car, the second I got on the highway I found out that it had a bad bearing and some time later I found out that there was tons of rust under the windshield. I never even thought about recontacting the guy even though he obviously knew about it all and I paid 12K for the car (it's an E30 M3).
The only person I had to blame was myself for not checking the car thoroughly enough.Comment

I'm pretty sure this stuff happens with about any used car bought. I drove 3 hours each way to pick up my e36 so I had the mind set that it was mine and might have ignored something important, like the throwout bearing, then on the way back I realized the clutch slips a little. No one to blame but myself.Crazy story.
