I read in a thread that you cant "rev" a e30 automatic or it will ....

    ... fry the clutch pack?

    What?

I've never heard that, nor had it happen. Granted, most of my e30's have been MT's, Ive had a few autos and I'm always revving the motor. Not constantly like some ricer bitch, but when I'm working on it, etc.

Anyone have info. REAL info, not just your goofy ass opinion, on this?

    Thanks..... mates.

Pretty much the shaft that connects the forward clutch pack in the transmission has a flaw. The metal bushings leak and allow the forward clutches to be pressurized while in park, neutral, and reverse. the updated bushings don't alow this, so usually if your tranny is still alive the bushing has been replaced.
    see pics,

this is the old metal bushings that allow tranny fluid to seem through

    Updated bushings

and this diagram shows which parts are affected

If you google the 4hp22 you will get plenty of horror stories.

Wow, thats a crazy amount of part numbers.

all you will need to do is look up the part numbers for the new seals and the affected clutches and steel sleeves. Also a new input shaft bearing and re-assemble then you're good to go.

i found out about this the hard way at 3am in the middle of bumfuck. good news is reverse will still work :P
up until then, my extent of working on an e30 was spark plugs and oil changes. i got to know the car pretty well after the trans

That's old news. It became a problem mostly at smog checks where they would just have the car stationary and rev up the engine for a few minutes. BMW even put out a bulletin about it I believe. Just another reason to get rid of the autotragic in these cars.

That's because its a Land Rover and it doesn't run long enough or often enough to kill the transmission.

my auto tranny holds up to tons of abuse, I rev it up every now and then and spin donuts once a week. Maybe when the PO did the shift kit he also fixed the issue.
