No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.Comment

I had a neighbor who bought a Prius and gave me a 20 minute lecture on how my e30 is bad for the environment and his car makes him more socially conscious. I printed out a copy of Dust to Dust and handed it to him saying "I saved my car from rotting away in a scrapyard. I define green."
I get really sick of people repeating what they hear, filling in what they don't know with assumptions and not researching the claims.

I had a Prius tailgaiting me yesterday on the way home from work. I hope he enjoyed my black, carbony smoke I spew out at every 6k shift.

heard of that report but never read it. an E46 M3 has a lower total energy cost than the stupid Prius. hahaha.Comment

Totally agree. You can put me in the "greeny" camp and believe in reducing carbon footprint etc., but alot of people don't look at total life cycle assessment of a product when considering whether it's "green' or not. Restoring an E30 is more green than buying a prius or electric car for sure up to a certain amount of miles driven.sigpicComment

my prius neighbor gave me the same shit. I can easily go buy a prius but hell I'm doing him and his children a favor by having a carbon footprint much smaller than his.. ungrateful prick. maintenance wise, the e30 is simple compared to the upkeep and pollution of a modern ice carComment

a new nissan compact hatch with 1.6 turbo 190hp
Looking to expand interest in its brand in China, Nissan held the World premiere of the Compact Sport Concept at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show. This three-door hatchback concept has a turbo-charged 1.6-liter engine, which produces 190-hp.Couple that with a CVT gearbox with paddle-shifters for its six-speeds and this would be a pocket rocket. The concept was designed at Nissan’s Global Design Center in Japan, with input from the brands new Beijing design studio in China.Nissan says, the Compact Sport Concept is “for young customers in emerging countries.”The concept seems to be built on the platform of the new Micra, even some interior elements look to have been borrowed.Comment

For the kind of driving a lot of people do, electric cars make sense. I'm talking about sub-50 mile commutes, gridlock, and suburban errands. Torquey, quiet, enough range.
Not that I'd really ever buy one, but as a general trend in short-range beige automotive transport, right on to the electric car. Just as long as they get the production and end-of-life energy usage under control.Comment

im comparing the maintenance on my big o e46. although the items replaced are generally the same between the 2 platforms, the material and energy required to produce the same equipment on an e46 is more (i.e rotors, brake pads, tires, highest grade gas) not to mention that you pretty much need more of everything:
4 quarts of engine oil in my e30 vs 8 on my e46
8 qz of trans oil in my e30 vs 12 on my e46
brake pads, tires, wear a lot less than my e46 (pretty much have to baby the e46 in order for the components to last as long as the e30)
honestly, my e30 maintenance wise is as cheap as maintaining a new corolla. of course im basing my argument from a carbon footprint standpointLast edited by bmwstephen; 04-27-2011, 04:54 PM.Comment
