But the hobbyist plates? Any engine swap? No emissions? the only suspension limitation being that the frame cannot go lower than the lowest portion of the wheel? the plate never expires until you die, or it goes away somehow?

Worth the wait time for it IMO

This is why I'm keeping my cars registered in CO while I'm in grad school in CA, because FUCK emissions.

As was I. And there are ways.... My M3 is one of the furthest things from "smog legal" Ways that shan't be repeated on the interwebz for fear of reproach from any number of environmental/law enforcement agencies.

Or you could "Find" a smog guy who is very blind, install a catalyst on your exhaust and try it. SWIM legally passed one customer's car that had a stage 3 setup on his m20, 3" stainless exhaust with a metallic spun cat. Numbers passed easy. Flying colors.

I know of a few people running boosted E30's. One guy removes the setup every 2 years for smog purposes.
"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

When I originally got my Nissan Titan supercharged, I didn't even consider smog. My dad told me to tape a $100 bill inside the engine bay and just not say anything. 20 minutes later the tech came out with a smile and I passed. I could see that going in a less favorable direction though.

I don't think smog is the true issue, it's more the PO-LICE and how you're F'd in the A if they pop your hood...and Ryan lives in a "rural area" so I doubt he has biannual smog.

I got my hood popped once about 2 years ago...the cops...majority of them have no idea what they are looking at. I mean, he did notice my engine block was green, there was a turbo, I had some sort of "intake" cone filter on the turbo. My flex bellow "cat" on my downpipe saved my ass though.

Just don't give them a reason to pop your hood. I was being a dumbass on the streets at 2am, so I gave them every reason to question me. I ended coming out with a 2 point speeding ticket which cost a shit load of money...lesson learnt.

I presume that this is what you've done right?

Can you go into a bit more detail about this? How much does it cost for the plate? Can you also get insurance for it as a classic then?

Could you technically open up a PO Box in WI like these other guys do or do you actually need to be a resident of the state?

I had my hood popped by CHP last year (in the M3) and all they needed to see was the CF intake. I was pulled over due to the fact that he smelled my 101 octane and wondered if I had any cats, that lead to him asking me to pop my hood. He was decent about it, though and gave me a fixit ticket for my front plate. I guess he liked the car.

Yeah, and 2 pointers are misdemeanors, so thats an added awesomeness.

Yeah dude but thats the least plausible option because instead of just spending a couple bucks to have it pass, you have to have the headache of putting everything back to stock, and with setups like my S14 has, thats a royal pain in the balls.

Indeed, definitely much easier to get it "smogged".
