You need to explain to your friend that the E30 M3 market is quite picky.
We've seen some "restoration" individuals who try to do that, and the cars get "black listed" as complete junk bombs. A quick paint job and some wheels don't attract the right buyers for these cars.

A quality restoration will far exceed the $45k mark by the time your done if you want it to be a clean, well sorted, street example. Restorations on E30 M3's if done properly, are almost always a losing money proposition at this point in time.

      Good luck,
      Chris

If I have to give him 4 grand, I will. If I have to give him 5 grand, I still will.

This is the car that brought me here. After riding in Ryan's 2.5l e30 m3, there has never been another car that stood out so much to me because of it's pure enjoyment and brilliance in the way it moved and balanced through every turn.

I will bring this thing back. I will buy it and make it look good.

If I can grab it, I will make make it run and look good in under a month, then start fixing the tedious stuff. This is no walk in the park though. It really does need A LOT of work.

Not always wise to start with the cheapest M3 you can find. The rule comes into play a lot on M parts and NLA stuff.

My red M3 was $3500 back in 06 and I have since spent 4K plus on it and It still does not have paint. Mine was all original down to springs and shocks. Car wandered and floated all over the place. Just sticking in Bilsteins and Eibachs was an immense improvement.

I have the resources, time, and a place to make this happen. I'm not looking at dollar signs but at the same time, I'm not looking to do a 30k restoration. This is a 14k car at best, and I can easily take it there.

The rule of M's is true; it'll cost $15k either way to have a nice one.

                  Good luck!!

this is so very true, and my first thought when I read he wanted to flip the car.
A profit won't be made in this car in dollars, but more a profit of having a great car in the end...and a great bond with the car after working on it as much as you will have to.

This one is too good to let die, and I applaud your vision of getting turned around again.

I love how people go on and on about how awesome the car is, its history, then in the same breath talk about swapping the engine. The engine is one of the main points of the car that made it legendary, has a rich history of competition wins, and has a great story to tell as opposed to the absolutely run-of-the-mill and common and almost not worthy of the "S" designation US S50 or even lesser M50 and provided it with the wherewithal to do the other awesome thing it did .....mainly handle and well, gave it its peaky character, and neutral weight balance. I know its more cost-effective, but Jesus just get a regular e30 and put all that money into getting C/O's, possibly some body modifications and a swap if youre gonna do that. At least youd have more money to play with and youd save yet another E30 ///M3 from bastardization..... The E30 ///M3 is not a "budget" car you can cut corners with that "looks cool". If you dont have the money to treat it as it should be treated, then look elsewhere (or go balls to the fucking wall like Ryan dd with his M3 and be original about it). We seem to all be aficionados of this car, then truly value the car. Even though doing all these swapping shenanigans only makes my car increase in price......

Whats that quote from "Road Trip" about "Thats why they call it (something or other), if it was easy it would just be 'the way'".

end of old-fashioned, old man-like, purist rant.
