I say pass on both toyota and e30 and get a subaru. Impreza, for downhill and uphill.
if you want to kill people in the twisty's, Impreza is where its at. very low weight, very nimble body for changing directions, long travel to WOT over bumpy stuff.
any marginal 2.2L impreza with tires and footwork will eat a similar power/prepped e30 alive in the mountains; same driver.
I would get a sooby if I wanted to but I want to get a cheap late 80s early 90s rwd car under 3k for a fun beat up car and dd. If I'm gonna get an impreza ill be way too careful with it not have fun...the same problem with my 33k original mile 1998 cobra that I got rid of for mainly the same reason. What's the point in having a car if you're just gonna clean it and take pictures of it instead of beating and driving it to shit itself?

um, why not DRIVE the impreza? we run STi's in the mountains untill all rotors and midpipe/back box are glowing....... :P
it can be pretty AND be driven!!! my e36m did DD+track days on weekends all the time :D
everything you stated is also your opinion, and nothing more than that. I never stated anything about reliable, just build quality, and as my opinion.
But it's a fact that more weight over the front end is the cause of less "nimbleness" I can tell you that my car when it had the m42 felt much lighter in the corners. look at audi's Understeering pigs because of all the front weight!
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Um because ill be spending one pretty ass penny out here for one of those. I don't feel like buying a nice nice car...just a decent car for a good base to work on
Base model impreza L 1.8 or 2.2 liter: $1500-2500;
same price as a decent e30 or celica supra. I don't see how these cost more than e30's, they are often bought under $1,000.
the original 147hp 2.2L engine in my 1997 legacy station wagon will out run my 325 on the freeway or mountains, the large station wagon also weighs no more than the e30. An Impreza with the same 2200cc would eat the e30 as it just does not have to brake.
mods: all avail under the sun, same or less money than e30 mods. PLENTY of cheap mods
Weight: lighter than either e30 or celica supra stock.
Pros: less weight, more mod-ability, faster in mountains due to more travel and more grip, less electronic failures than both celica supra and e30.
cons: AWD. you may not want AWD. otherwise, AWD > RWD in the mountains; if you care about speed.
I have owned 3 80's toyotas, one 90's, 4 90's and 2000's subarus, and now DD/mountain drive an E30.
Here are the restrictions to my interests right now. 3k lbs or under, RWD, manual, mid 80s-early 90s import that isn't a piece of sh*t. Cost has to be 2500 or less since I have bout 5k to work with and known to be a very reliable car. With the research I've done so far these two cars make the cut so that's the topic on hand. No disrespect man but discussion should be left to these two cars...that's why I started this thread so I can get opinions on these two cars alone.
So....we come to an e30 forum to ask whether to buy an e30 or a Toyota?
Whuut?
I say buy the Toyota, otherwise, this is just time wasted.
Yes I did come to an e30 forum to ask about a Toyota, but I also went to a Toyota forum asking about the e30. I want non-biased opinions. I'm getting people saying e30 on the Toyota forum and I'm getting people saying the Toyota on the e30 forum...exactly what I was looking for and so far I'm getting good insite on both cars from opposite parties.
