Marketing. That, and take a look at e36's. (Don't turn this into an "E36's aren't real M's argument")

I know when i was growing up, it was taboo to have a 4 door and usually you got made fun of. But it seems that the under 25 crowd could care less about the door count. /rant.
That goes back to mid century american car value.. By that logic convertibles are the most desireable.
But not in the modern classic BMW world, because its popularity is performance based. So to me theres no difference e30 wise because the car/wheelbase is still the same. Looks wise well I personally dont give a crap about that.

I think it takes more effort to make a 4D look nice, but once they're set up I tend to like them more.

When it comes to E30's in general, looks and performance in 2 and 4 doors are virtually the same so it's more or less a moot point.

I will say, however, there is a reason STI's and Evo's come in the 4 door flavor.

I hate the massive, heavy doors of a "coupe"
Harder to open doors in tight spaces, I can put my bookbag in my back seat without reaching over my front seats, I don't have to get out to let anyone in, and aftermarket seats don't need the quick flip forward function. I used to own just a two door but now all my DDs will be saloons.

4 doors have a better shape actually. Especially on e36s.

I tried to rock a 4 door but at 6'5" tall, the b-pillar absolutely killed my left side view.

Not really being biased or anything, but I like my e30s in four doors. My e36 of 3 years was a coupe and was starting to become a pain not having back doors and not driving others.

To me, coupe's and sedans look just as good.

Coupe all the way. The sedan is super small and has less room in the front for the driver than a coupe and not a lot of space for rear passengers. And isn't it all about the driver. I wouldn't touch a sedan e30. If you need a sedan get an e28 or e34. Also the e30 sedan definitely doesn't look as good as coupes. While were on looks I will say this, the e30 sedan is the best looking bmw 3 series sedan imo (the coupe and sedan share fenders hoods bumpers etc.) The e36 sedan is hideous. the e46 gets even worst imo and looks like a total grocery getter only, the e90 continues the trend with this weird compact frompyness. At this point its gotten so bad that there going to call the f3x coupe the 4 series, because at this point its probably going to look like a totally different car.
I want a nice set of smoked MHW's (I know, get it line)

you know how when you put 100 people in a room and ask them all a question, there is always one to answer completely opposite of everyone else? well, i think the cabrio with a removable hardtop painted the body color looks the tits.

Being 5' 8" I had no problems in my sedan.

I miss it terribly. One of the neatest bits is how the wind blows directly into the side of your face with windows down in a sedan. While I personally love that aspect - it's fun, it has been known to get annoying as well..
I think sedans look best in late model trim.
However, the early coupes look a bit better to me. My early coupe is beautiful in my eyes, whereas the early sedans look...chunky. I dunno.

By the way, I own an e36 sedan as well and I love it, hated my old e36 coupe. e36 sedan hands down!

It almost seems like from a design perspective, BMW first comes up with the 3 series as a sedan, then fashions a coupe out of the sedan design. The side profile looks stretched and forced to me with the coupe. The doors seem disproportionately long, and the bit between the B and C pillars is just vast blandness. It screams "There should be another door here!!"
^The above I hold true thus far for all BMW 3ers from 1988 onward.^

                                TL;DR
                                Earlies - Coupe > Sedan
                                Lates - Sedan > Coupe
                                E36 - Sedan >>> Coupe
All BMW 3er coupes 1988 onward look like unclaimed bastard children of otherwise respectable sedans.
