    That's worst case.

    what? No.

that looks like a case of high miles and/or improper lube. you aren't going to wear out the rocker pad because your valves are a little out of adjustment.

what's more likely to happen is you'll simply stress the rocker more. more stress = more likely to break.

I haven't adjusted mine in a while. I probably should. I've been feeling pretty apathetic towards my M20 lately. :p

      Never.

      Hydraulic lifters FTW.

(Never drive the e28 enough to warrant adjusting any, any time soon.)

I adjust valves every 10k (every other oil change).
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

While you're right that this particular case is probably a case of improper lube, Bastian was asking for a worst case-scenario (not a "little out of adjustment" as you put it). You will get more excessive wear if the rocker is wildly out of adjustment, but again you're also right to say that in all likely-hood you'll end up with a broken rocker.

and when the motor was warm, I bet it ran like crap and lost a a lot of power. too tight is worst than too loose.

I do mine when I first buy the car and then never again, usually only have em for a year or so.

It was actually smooth warm, which really suprised me. Didn't notice a lack of power because it was a stock single carb car.

Adjusting valves takes 15 minutes or less if you are serious. It will be more if you have a beer between crank revolutions.
