Ok so I'm sure everyone has herd of shaving a motor bay but my question is HOW DO YOU DO IT? I've never looked into it before, where does it all go? It remains a misery to me and I'd like some answers.
How do you shave?

Not going to lie, he's 100% right, it's a BITCH. Even mine, which wasn't even a full shave, was a gigantic pain in the ass.
Started by removing any brackets I didn't want, and grinding the areas flat:
Tacked new sections of sheet metal in where there were holes:
This became a MAJOR bitch lower in the bay, where the metal is VERY thin, we burned through more than we welded.
So then, Bondo:
Then black filler primer:
Then paint:

And then, this happened:
So I stripped it all back down to bare metal and body filler, and went with bedliner instead:

If you don't know what you're doing, don''t even ATTEMPT this by yourself. I partially knew what I was doing, and made a lot of mistakes that cost a lot of time, but it was worth it to learn how to do it right.Comment

Inside fenders, custom panels, straight up deleting stuff... it's more of a fabrication game than anything. Compare some fully shaved cars (or mini trucks) and you might notice oddly thick wheel wells and such, with a bit of creativity and skill you can design the metal work inside the engine bay to look stock but actually house reservoirs.Comment

I'm a big fan of wire tucks, and generally getting rid of unused bracketry and other un-necessary clutter in the bay. What I'm not a fan of AT ALL is that VW in this thread. That just looks retarded to me...Yikes. A stock engine bay looks much better IMO...plus THAT would have to be a serious pain in the ass to work on.
In other words...I'd rather look at the fusebox in the engine bay every time I pop the hood than crawl up underneath the dash to replace one...1991 318iS

What bed liner did you use?.

I am in the process of repainting my engine bay and was going to do alpine white again (factory), but that bedliner is probably cheaper and more durable and easier to apply.
Here is where I am at now.
