Doesn't a turbo effectively increase the engine discplacement?

Some kid was arguing with me it just forces in more air. Doesn't the rule of same amount of air but smaller volume mean increase in pressure? So if you're turbo is forcing in what a v8 would naturally be sucking in, you can say your displacement is the same (in a perfect world.) I know there is heat and all that other crap but it boils down to a turbo is adding displacement.

    Yes or no.
Ma che cazzo state dicendo? :|

It just adds more air dude.

The engine still displaces the same volume, there's just more air (by mass) in that volume

Displacement has a consistent definition: "Engine displacement is the volume swept by all the pistons inside the cylinders of an internal combustion engine in a single movement from top dead centre (TDC) to bottom dead centre (BDC)."

A turbo increases the amount of air in each cylinder during combustion, but that does not speak at all to a cylinder's volume.

Obviously physically it doesn't add displacement.

Hmm. So why did BMW include the displacement of the turbo for the engine size on old turbo BMWs?

to distinguish them from their N/A counterparts. In otherwords, marketing.

turbos basically increase the engine's VE by recycling waste heat from the exhaust. That's about it.

Once you hit 30 pounds of boost or so, the pressure causes the walls of the cylinder to expand out, thereby increasing the displacement of the engine...

To make them seem better, and hopefully sell more cars.

Displacement of an engine is a constant unless you get into cylinder deactivation or other very technical exceptions.

Ok I found my answer on another forum because I was talking about EFFECTIVE displacement, not actual.

Thanks anyways for your input even though it wasn't helpful.

you are thinking superchargers because they are often expressed in terms of capacity in liters..... and the rest is too difficult to explain .. search!
