Theft recovery = dont worry about it.

If it takes longer than 1 month to recover, automatic salvaged title. This is even if the car is found with ZERO damage.

I definitely vote for the e39. It's more modern, sophisticated, and livable day to day. It wouldn't be the case if there was an e34 m5 in the picture - that car has so much soul!

the nikasil blocks arent the biggest problem but it will probably always be in the back of your mind. After owning an e39 540i 6 speed and now the e34 M5, I can tell you a few things. The 540 wont require that much maintaince. at 100k the valve cover gaskets go. Expect wheel bearings and a clutch/flywheel. The tie rod ends will need to be replaced as well. Basically either car will cost a pretty penny to fix (if you dont know the right people) and I dont see why the e39 would have any more problems than the e34. I think a clutch/flywheel and installation from the stealer is around 2000. If you have the extra money, defenitely get the e39 with the 6 speed. If you havent driven one, go, and you wont turn back. The only reason I sold mine was b/c it was a lot of money for me at the time. Now I have an e34 M5 and love it. But the torque those 540s have is very nice. Youll be much happier with the beautiful e39, it feels great to drive, and dont consider a 540 without a 6 speed...

I'm between #2 and #3 right now. Going to give the owners a call tomorrow, see what the status on the car is and if the blocks were replaced. If they both check out fine, I'll go with the green...the black they used looks so bland.

So Sean, we might be going to SF next weekend.

#2 or #3. If you get an e39, don't get one with a salvaged title. Black e34 6spd, Now that is a hot ass car. Freeway bomber!!!

"Having won more road races than any other model in history, the E30 M3 is considered by many to be the world's most successful road race car." - Simply put, E30s kick ass.

It's the same case if the car was completely totalled though... it would still have the same theft title. You never know.

The fastest car I've ever driven is was a '95 supercharged 540i 6 speed. E34 all the way.

Green one advertises more maintenance being done to it lately; new water pump, clutch, front end bushings and links, and oil pump.

                              Time to call.

2,3,or 4. The E39 has the wrong wheels to be a 540i 6 speed. The early E39 540s came with the wheels that are on the last E34. They also came with an Alpina style multi spoke wheel that looked rather nice. Im not saying its not a 540, just saying that maybe it was meant to be a sleeper or whatever. The E34 540i six speed, contrary to the motoring press and a recent E34 buyers giude in Bimmer Magazine, is such a smooth elegant and silky performance machine, that it is one of my favorite cars that my family owns. My dad has one and its effortless acceleration and taught (but not too much) suspension make it the perfect executive Q car IMO. Almost as powerful as the ///M5 without the S38 eye opening repair bills, BUT it is still somewhat expensive to maintain and repair, not to mention the Alusil/Nikasil gamble. I say get the E34, they are lighter and look like a big E30. I think anything after the E34 is garbage in terms of build quality, and the E34 is when shit started to go sour to be honest, but it still has that tank-like build quality that was really prevalent in the E12, E30, E21, E28 and E23's. Electronics are garbage, though. After the E34, they stopped building cars that would last beyond 200K miles, IMO.
