I'm at about 4k w/ an S50 and full Mcoupe suspension, but I did get pretty lucky on most of the parts. Another 6k and I'd have a fully built motor w/ a turbo, but then you are quickly moving away from a reliable daily driver.

Assuming the car is in good condition and needs no maintenance, for me it would be something along these lines.

          Suspension/Wheels
          BC Gold - 8KG/MM front, 10KG/MM rear - $1,200
          Urethane bushes everywhere - $300
          IE 22/19 Sway bars - $440
Custom built strut tower braces - $200
          15x8 et15 meshies + 205/50/15 - $2,000

          = $4,140

          Engine/Drivetrain
          MM 2.9 Stroker - $1,900
          Miller MAF + W.A.R = $700
          4.10 LSD - $500
          Aluminium Flywheel - $500
          Clutch - $300
          Z3 based short shifter - $150
          eBay headers - $200
          Magnaflow 14815 - $200

          = $4,450

          Interior
          Recaro SRD/Bride Zeta etc - ~$1,000
          Momo Prototipo - $200
          ZHP Shift Knob - $60

          = $1,260

          Total = $9,850

All prices from memory, or rough estimates/guides. Also, if you can't work on cars yourself, then you may as well go and add another $5,000 on top.

Hey thanks guys, if I had my choice I'd definitely go back on time and get a coupe if I could but non american trucks are rare in wyoming as it is lol. I might go the route of making it run perfect then build up the suspension if I have any left I'll do the paint too.

In the oil field, you need a truck, not an E30. If your dad is offering to contribute 7-10k for you to get a vehicle that makes sense for your situation, and you take advantage of that by dumping in it a vehicle that does not make sense, you will regret your decision and your father will resent his kindness.

              A. Get a $6,000 toyota T100 and tell your dad to keep the change
              B. make and save money working in the oil field without worrying about cracking another m20 oil pan
              C. when you have disposable income from the oil field, improve your e30.

Every suspension part on the car.
And make sure the engine is completley up to snuff. All maintence done.
                And maybe a respray?

i agree with fronton. i wouldn't get a wimp truck though i suppose it depends on your purpose. i think that you could buy a 99 or 2000 f250 diesel for the 6k that was mentioned in that thread. i get 18 mpg with mine as a dd. it has enough size and power that you can do some serious work with it. also nobody laughs at you when you pull up to the job site.

as far as fixing your car, i would also completely redo the suspension, m50 or m52 engine swap. perhaps 5 lug. assuming the paint is good that is.

I would be buying something 4wd and reliable to make sure I get my ass to work. I have worked around Wamsutter and it fucking snows there. Also bosses dont take kindly to "I cant get to work because my "CAR" wont go in the snow". Once you have the DD taken care of then you can Dump the 10k into your fun car, its time to be responsible. I would be getting a 6-8 year old 1/2 ton at BARE minimum, but oil field and pipeline ROW roads are not too kind to 1/2 tons, 3/4 ton would be better. Also a older 3/4 GMT400 Suburban would be acceptable as well. Can be had Cheap and Cheap to fix and Maintain, as well as easy to work on.

I work in the oil fields too

IMHO, I'd never dump that much $ into an e30..unless it was an m3. You'll never get your $ back, esp. if the car were totalled in an accident (or hit and run, etc.)
