This guy is right. I had to deal with this once. It a BAR referee station
I'm in San Jose though. I just swapped on my stock exhaust and passed. I find it quite odd you got a ticket with stock exhaust.

You should pass with flying colors and then you'll just have to pay the $25 "processing fee" to our money hungry state when you prove its fine.

You do NOT have to take a car to a referee for a modified exhaust ticket.

You take it to a CHP station and they listen to it for 2 seconds to see if it's quiet enough and they sign it off. They don't inspect a damn thing. Why do I know this? My good friend just had to deal with this in his E30 a couple weeks ago. CHP wrote him off with no issue and he doesn't even have a cat on the car.

Ticket should cost you like $25 after it's signed off.

We could be talking about two different citations, but I got a ticket for my exhaust being too loud (I almost remember the ticket saying modified exhaust). This required a referee inspection and there was NO OTHER OPTION. CHP cannot sign these off.

It happened quite a while ago so I don't remember the code number or exactly what the law was called. It its a sound issue, it had to be taken to a ref no matter what.

A blown out muffler doesn't matter during smog.

Yes, that is what we are saying. Its a load of crap. Our state doesn't take enough money from us, they find every single little way to take more.

I mean come on....They have to pay someone to probably push one button to enter into the system that the ticket has been handled.

But it got dismissed so how is that your problem? Should have the officer who wrote it pay the fine...bet you less BS tickets would be written

In NY if you get a fix it ticket you have 24hrs to fix w.e is broken show up at the precinct and they drop it right there no fuss.

It depends if they marked correctable or not. I've had one in the e30 where I just had it signed off and it was $10- I also got one that was simply a fine in my Titan. Didn't have to correct anything, just had to pay $170+

Thaaaaaats California! I'm currently online paying for my "no front license plate" ticket. Got the ticket on my windshield while it was parked, fine. Put the plate on, got it signed off, was about to pay the $10 (for correcting it/$25 if you dont correct it) and I got a letter in the mail saying the Sherrif was using an old ticket book. Not correctable and it's $43 CSB.

You can cram it full of fiberglass, that should quiet it long enough to pass. I did it to mine so i could stealth home late at night. LOL (it works)

bottom line is, regardless if you passed emissions, or the exhaust is stock, if you got pulled over my guess is that it is loud as shit when you accelerate because if it is literally stock, and its from the east coast, its probably tons of holes in the muffler and sounds like shit...take it to a smog referee, see if it needs to be replaced, if it does, replace it, if not, pay the fine for having a borderline loud exhaust (you know this you said it yourself) and problem solved
