What mods have improved your mpg?

LIke already said, if you get rid of your big ass wheels you will notice a significant increase in mpg. Rides better/quieter too...

I just watched my mpg-o-meter in relation to gears, rpms, and speed to see where my optimum power band is. Don't go for the least amount of rpms, try to stay where your car's engine is running most efficiently except when on highways. Air up your tires, keep stock wheels, prevent any obstructions aerodynamically, AC on instead of windows down at high speeds, keep up on maintenance. That's all you can do. All of it is in your driving.

I'm only getting about 26 on the highway out of my stock M42, I think I've got a lot of room to improve.

I noticed a 2-3 mpg decrease when I did it to my nice, rare E30 Touring that needed some cosmetic restoration.

I only left a small hole for me to fit in , all other open space was welded shut.

Don't fill your tank unless needed (lots of weight there).

Haha... I never let my car go below 3/4 mark... about 60L.

^I don't let it get above 1/2. Everyone tries saying you get better mileage with a full tank, but then I introduce them to a new trend called physics. Hasn't really caught on yet.

I lost around 1mpg switching from a 3.73 to a 4.27 rear end with sticky tires. Average 21 mpg overall - which includes letting the M20 sing Italian style often (keeps the carbon out).

I free wheel down any downhill grade. Just slap it in neutral.

This is a slightly old thread, but keeping it in gear and coasting is actually more fuel efficient than putting it in neutral. When in gear and coasting, the computer doesn't send any fuel to the engine since the wheels are keeping the engine spinning, but in neutral, the engine is idling which uses slightly more fuel.

just look at the mpg meter, you'll see it pegged at 0 when your in gear and coasting. As soon as it goes into neutral, you'll see it go up/

but you can also coast further in neutral due to engine braking. it gets worse when you increase the engine's compression.

depending on the situation, it can be a wash.
