      I more or less have always lived within $5 of the light on as long as im not going for a cruise or on a long trip.

        broke baggypants ITT

        I always fill it up full and run it to the reserve light. I've often driven to work and back a couple times on the reserve. I've done this for the last 10 years without an issue. The pump will be fine - I've never had starvation problems (even below 1/4 on hard right handers), and the original pump worked perfectly and quietly until I replaced it at 230k (mistakenly, problem turned out to be bad main relay, not the pump).

        you aren't doing yourself any favors by never filling it full, or never running it to the reserve. if there's that much crud in your tank that you're going to instantly clog your filter, you might consider a flush or completely replacing the tank. otherwise, that's what the damn filter is for, just replace it once in a while and you'll be fine. the pump also has a sock on it so it's not like big particles will get sucked right into it.

        the difference in MPG is going to be laughably small. you aren't going to notice anything at all in a steady cruise. I get about 3mpg when I peg the throttle anyway, it's not going to change that.

          Fill it to the top, refill within a day when the light comes on. There's no use in either keeping it constantly full or constantly empty. Unless you're not driving the car for months you might as well just shell out $50 and fill it now instead of $5 for the next ten days.

              I'd be buying gas like every other day if I filled it at half tank. I always fill it up and run it to almost the red/in the red, which is about every 5 days. I've never seen my gauge light on and I've taken it to where the left side of the needle is outside the red. Maybe my bulb is out. I probably shouldn't fill it up as my car smells gassy after the first 20 miles or so after completely filling it. No doubt there is a hole somewhere near the top of the tank...

                  Like a normal person....when the gas tank is empty, I fill it up, then drive it until it's empty.

                    I keep my tank full.

                    When I worked on my local AFB I would fill up almost everyday after work. My course throughout the day would normally be

                    Home -> School -> Home -> Work -> Gas Station (~$5) -> Home

                      Another vote here for running until the light is on and then filling until full.

                      I do this in all of my cars.

                        I run until 1/8 left (on my perfectly functioning gauge btw*) and fill it up. Been getting around 300 miles out of a tank with mostly highway going mostly 85 @ 26 mpg with my M42. ;)

                          im broke, so i usually let it go until a little into the idiot light. i guess it doesnt matter though because i will still use roughtly the same amount of fuel whether i keep it above half or run it on fumes.

                              I typically only run 1 gallon (1.5 MAX) in my tank at any given time.

                              This really helps me shave that weight so I can get quicker launches and really allows me to fully control and manipulate the vehicle in all corners and turns on my way to my community college.
