When breaking a bolt loose I always try to pull the ratchet/wrench toward me. Prevents busted knuckles when the bolt or socket suddenly goes.
Or if you need to push on something, just push with your palm, fingers spread. That way when it breaks loose, the ratchet hits, and your hands stay safe.

first off, i work in a shop, im a mechanic, and am speaking from experience.
gloves on oil changes only, why? its usually hot and i hate getting burned, dont care about dirt, we have hand scrup and gloves aren't good for small nuts and bolts...
we have one tech who wears gloves...bright neon pink gloves, yeah...gay, in his defense he races a turbo r6 that runs in the 8's so..he can do what he wants.
my friends at dealerships all wear gloves, mostly because they get looked down on for "being dirty", if the cars dirty im getting dirty, PERIOD>
I never really understood the whole "I can't work with small nuts and bolts" argument. Obviously you can't wear big leather work gloves, but there are gloves out there that are like second skins like the Ansell Hyflex's that I posted. I dunno, I started in the trade wearing gloves so I guess I'm just used to it. It was mandatory in my shop to wear gloves when I started so I guess I just learned how to make it work. There are some times where you need to take your gloves off, but I hate scrubbing my hands 3 times a day, and then going home with dirt, and oil under my fingernails. Call me a priss, but it's much nicer to just throw out a pair of gloves at the end of the day and go home with clean hands rather than scrub and scrub and scrub.
