If you could get rid of the window breaker & fader knob above the stereo as pictured above, and put the remaining buttons on one side, I bet you could fit something along those lines in there.
One more thing, my mom's A4 has the same popout cup holder, and while it's convenient, I also find it somewhat useless since it's not very big. It doesn't seem to hold anything bigger than a coffee mug, or a standard water bottle.
I'm probably going to go with this, which was posted earlier in the thread: http://e30.bmwdiy.info/cup-holder/index.html
Not too expensive, out of the way, and big enough to hold just about any kind of bottle or mug. My rear ashtray is broken anyway, so this will help hide it too.

reading this thread makes my damn head spin......"too expensive" "kinda pricey" "looks cheap" "doesnt hold anything"
Three great solutions:
e36 or even an e46 center console swap. Seen pics of both.
The double holder conversion gadget guy sells
or the "cheap" foldable single holder that mounts behind the ebake and above the rear ashtray.
Condense all of the buttons around the head unit and add pull out trays that are strengthened to the inside of the dash.
OR use a side mount next to the shifter on both sides? Wont look stock but oh well.
Ive always wanted a back seat center pull down like EVERY OTHER CAR IN THE WORLD....

Well back when the e30 was made there weren't as many differences between euro and us model bmws, just stuff that was necessary by law at the time like diving board bumpers, side reflectors, and stuff like that. Look at the e46, in the US we got cupholders, and in europe they got what we call a "euro tray" in the center console where the cupholders would be. In europe it's not as common to drive around with drinks and multitask in the car, when you're driving, you're just driving nothing else. Same thing with ashtrays, even with the e30s the euro ones got different kind of "open" tray that goes there instead. I have one in my e30.Zinno '89 <24v swap in progress>
