Cars, like fashion trends, music and many other things lose and gain popularity with age. The E30 is probably coming back into the spotlight now that the original is about 30 years old. 1980's cars in general are gaining popularity again. 5 years ago I got made fun of for having an origami-doorstopper MR2, and now everyone thinks it's the cat's pajamas.

Surprisingly this bum outside of a McDonald's i went to knew what my car was as he complimented it as a "Dope E30 bro!!" then proceeds to take a nap. I was surprised that he even knew what an E30 was.
Several days after, i was at the same McDonalds and as i was about to order at the drive-thru, this guy cut me off by saying "That's an awesome E30". I was lost in thought for a couple seconds not because of the fact that this guy thought my faded and dinged brilianrot was cool but the fact that i might have just gotten trolled or the bum got a job.

Interestingly I seem get noticed less now than I used to. When my car was still m20, DB's, stock other than lowered on ghetto e36 lowering springs and stock shocks, and had knockoff BBS I got compliments all the time. Now it's S52 powered, proper suspension, with real BBS, and seems to fly under the radar for most part.

that might be due to the fact that a heavily moded example looks to be restored where as a stock example seems to be a really well kept 25 plus year old car. the later is probably much rarer.

Same here, when I had my other shitbox e30's people would be more complimentative. Now that I have a freshly painted s52'd e30 it gets barely reconized, to the point were not even honda kids try to challenge me on highways....oh well, I guess im my car's biggest fan

The problem is its not an E30 anymore with an S52.

Not realizing I've forgotten more fbody knowledge than they ever knew.

Yeah, people know the term 'e30'. They use it to let u know... they know. I just read a mag where someone wrote that they got into e30's because of the issue with mike buroughs stance car and saw an e30 in it. So mags and stance movement are probably major factors.

Here in Germany, people care less about E30 more than ever before. About 4 years ago, I used to get alot of old men stopping me and telling me they had the exact same car 15 years ago. Now they are more expensive than e36s, but def. not old enough to be cool, but also to old to be cool.. if that makes sense.
Can't wait to get the e21 on the road this summer, they are even more rare than 02s here. Gonna be the ultimate euro hipster!

My previous BMW, a 1986 Artci Blue 535i, got a lot more compliments. I miss it but it is lost.
