This reminded me of an experience at the Subway I worked at years ago.So I had to make an emergency purchase at Auto Zone last weekend. I drove an hour and a half to swap wheels and I ended up needing 1 spacer to clear the front struts. I called the local Auto Zone and asked for 4x100 spacers and they said they had some in stock. When I got there they guy that I had talked to on the phone went and grabbed 5x120 spacers.... I told him 4x100 and he was like what? I don't think he knew what I was talking about so I just had him show me where the spacers were and got them my self. And he didn't know how thick they were either. I asked for 5mm and he said they only have american measurements. Gah I hate Auto Zone
Me: American, Swiss, or Provolone cheese?
Customer: AMERICAN! Don't want none of that FOREIGN cheese!

Amazingly enough, it shares the same engine as the 944!I used to work in an indy shop in Reno, NV. One stand out moment was when a younger guy came in obviously very proud of his first BMW, an E30 318i.
Me: Ok, Nice car!
Kid: Thanks, and this super limited edition engine is all-some!!
Me: Umm, what engine do (think) you have in there?
Kid: Its a Zundfolge 1342 engine, very limited edition! Not all 318's came with these!
Me: Oh man, they saw you coming, didnt they?
I still wonder how much more he paid for that Zundfolge motor.1989 325i - 2.7i, Holset H1C, 60lb injectors, whodwho MS-PNP.

my friend told me how it annoys him that i have to pull up the e-brake every time I park. He says 'dude your car is so old look at that handbrake, most new cars don't even come with them.' so I said 'yeah but that's because and new cars don't come with manual transmissions either.' so then we park and I yank up the e-brake and he says 'see now what the heck you dont have to do that, you're in park. it isn't going anywhere.'
I'm not sure if he's mentally retarded or blind because I KNOW he saw me shifting gears. damn I need new friends.
It's almost like the time I gave a girl from school a ride home and the whole ride she says 'your car sounds like it's broken. you're just like my dad, he likes to switch between Low and High sometimes too because it says it makes him feel sporty or something i dont understand why anyone would do that....blah blah blah'
I laughed out loud.

I just started a part time job at a major automotive part retailer (I'll leave the actual name off) and within the first two weeks I've already heard some crazy things. Most I try to forget.
An associate was helping a customer trying to find an "ignition core" for a car and wondered why we had no parts listed. I typed in C-O-I-L and voila, it was the first result.
Another associate said that you don't actually have to replace the timing belt on motors until they break, just because the dealer just wants your money. He has a car with 180,000 miles and he bought it with the original timing belt at 25,000. The car is from the early 90s. I told him he might want to check and see if the motor was interference or not and he had no idea what I was talking about. His justification was that Cubans drive cars until things like this break and you can just fix them on the side of the road.
A few years back at the Dragon (US129) a guy in a E46 330i had a tough time trying to get away from my friend's Volvo S70. After talking to him after we stopped my friend said that in the tight turns he had difficulty keeping up because the FWD chassis had a significant amount of understeer. BMW guy says "Oh yeah, mine is FWD too."
We proceeded to point out the differential and axles at the rear wheels of the car. Total douchebag. He also apparently wrecked his brand new CLK driving like a dumbass on mountain roads at night.'84 318i M10B18 147- Safari Beige
