a 200k m20 on boost is not going to live long (expect the ring lands to fail). and you guys talking about tuning are forgetting a major part of that - dyno tuning. that could cost a pretty big chunk of change, and you want to do it right or if you don't, you end up like those 9/10 people who blow up their motors and don't have a clue as to why.
also, streetable, competetive drift car? You might want to rethink that.Comment

Didn't the OP say he wasn't worried about the reliability of the turbo'd motor because he is swapping in the future anyway?
The way im seeing it is for the money, boosting the m20 is the way to go. I WILL eventually do an m/s5x so im not looking for it to last long or be reliable. So i think i just realized that out of the three key aspects (cost, power, and reliability) I only need the first 2. Am i making sense? I have never owned a car with the same motor in it for more than 2 years... so i guess it makes sense to boost?Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one? so, he wants to make his car a competetive drift car, but still his street car, but he doesn't want it to be reliable?
how much fun do you think it is to go to a track and have the car break down halfway through? races are won with reliability.
just on tuning (computer + dyno) he will end up spending the cost of an S52 swap, not including the turbo, manifold, and other stuff that goes with it, and of course the time wasted putting a turbo on a 200k block that's certainly going to fail.Comment

A supercharged M50 or S50 might be worth looking into. It'd be a lot more reliable than a boosted M20, and I think a supercharger will be less complicated to install.Comment

I have thought this through for a long time now...
Ok, so all of you are assuming (except vivek) that im the type of person who has no connections, doesnt do there own fab work or work in general, and goes for the best quality i can buy. Frankly i believe higher priced brands are ripping you off most of the time, I HATE paying for a brand name for a mediocre product. I have access to a dyno for a case of beer if i want, and this isnt my first build so i know the extra money ill proly be spending.
Sorry for not mentioning, but i would at LEAST do a head gasket, head studs, water pump and timing belt, and i have done most other maintenance items in the last year.
Thanks for the debate though r3vJohn 16:33

If you have been doing your own research and using the search button, you'd be able to find the best build suited to your budget.
I've gone through 6 separate different build possibilities, researched them on my own, and came to my ultimate conclusion as to what I want to do on my car for my personal budget. Needless to say, I didn't have to create 6 separate build threads to get r3v to hold my hand through the process
You said it yourself; m50 won't get you enough power for what you want. Then drop that possibility and look for a swap/build that will get you what you want. You asked for our opinions: stop getting butthurt when we start giving themComment

Competition being what it is, in most cases there is a reason that the higher priced brands cost more. And it isn't the name, it is the quality.I have thought this through for a long time now...

On a 200k engine you will have to go further than head gasket, studs, etc., before boost. Line an overbore, new pistons, rebuilt head, new cam, bottom end bearings, etc. In other words a full engine rebuild. If you don't do that there is a decent chance of engine failure before it makes it through dyno tuning. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

My money is on ring land failure. very common on high mileage M20s with boost.Competition being what it is, in most cases there is a reason that the higher priced brands cost more. And it isn't the name, it is the quality.

it really sounds like a quick cheap m30 swap is what you need to hold you over untill you invest in a s52 build. it will get you more power than an m50 and be more reliable than a cheap turbo setup for your m20, it will be a little heavier than the m20 up front but your not racing your drifting you can make it work.Shawn @ Bimmerbuddies

OP wants to do an eventual m50/s50 swap. With the money he's goin to blow blowing his turboed m20, he can buy an s52 swap and call it a day.
Your looking at pushing close to 210 rwhp, then add a chip and some bolt ins and you'll hit projected HP range
Makes no sense to take the long way around if you already know what you want. M30 is also a cheap budget build that is more than reasonable to make bullet proof for incredibly cheapLast edited by JinormusJ; 02-16-2013, 04:27 PM.Comment

I like where your coming from.
