What you showed me was a chunky tire'd 318 doing 0-65 (which is 0-60 actual on BMWs) in a tad bit over 10 seconds, but I factored in the mistakes and whatever other excuse you could come up with and generously gave you 9 seconds. Even if you have 8 seconds, BMW official spec numbers is still 7.4, and m20s are still indeed faster
I don't know how many more times you want to prove your ignorance ITT
Please stop spewing misinformation and stick with the facts pleaseComment

I have probably owned more e30s than you have seen.

Yeah, I don't care what the magazines say. That's not true.
I was surprised to learn it myself, having fun in my first lightly-modded 325is vs a similar 318is. His bumper was at my b-pillar- not a "win" in my mind.
It's proven true since I've been in an m42 car- I've cut more time with good handling mods than an m20 can make with the extra power it has (NA vs same).past:

in all honesty, how much lighter can an M42 be in comparison to the M20? can't be much- the complete cars.. o.k. there is a difference.
I just do not understand how someone can say a car with minimal weight difference and 40 hp less is faster or better than another e30 with said M20. maybe it can get around a corner a smallest bit faster, but remove A/C in said M20 and you are at the same weight with 40hp more......
throw a cheap cam and some headers on said M20 and it runs that much better too. cams for M42?Last edited by mikeedler; 03-03-2013, 12:58 AM.Comment

All I'm getting at is the ignorance that people believe stock for stock 0-60 m42 is faster than m20. There is no way in hell that is possible.
That being said, I would more readably swap an m20 car than an m42 car because the m20 is so dang heavy and doesn't have a power output to justify its weightComment

I'm not saying one is better. I'm saying they're basically the same. If you're going to keep the factory engine, pick your poison (like I did)- a little more power, or a little more corner speed. Pretty simple.past:

and I am trying to say... M42 is not any better in any way. o.k. except maybe sport seats and a black headliner. cornering is VERY debatable, esp. if your still running a 25y/o suspension, and choice of tires too. 2 hours of work, and your M20 car handles just as good in corners and has 40hp more.
you poor M42 guys will never admit it though.Comment

There is nothing wrong with a timing belt, takes no time for an experienced mechanic to do the timing belt, wp and tensioner. The m20 is simple, less things to go wrong. M42 has tappets and profile gasket failures that BOTH alone take more time than adjusting the valves and everything else you mentioned.Last edited by F34R; 03-03-2013, 01:16 AM.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~
