I would agree that an m42 e30 can be a blast to drive. The lighter front end is no doubt better for handling but from a reliability/maintenance standpoint... Ill take any bmw straight 6 over a m42 that's all. I work on e30s just as much as I drive them thus my feelings on the m42.
wtf is up with m42swaps?

We can agree to disagree. I *personally* think the m42 is a nice little engine in stock form and has a lot of potential if one were to spend the money on building it up. I mentioned the s42 because displays the potential of the m42. Just look at the metric mechanic M42.= Heidi 1988 325 -> 335i. 7200rpm built M30Comment

The bottom line is this: you like what you like. Anyone with a handsome budget can make any engine awesome. (MM m42 engines, turbo engines ect) It goes for any engine for that matter.
/thread pls. this discussion is so exhausted it just goes round and round in circles.

All you guys yanking M42's - anybody have a cheap runner for sale??
And I'm all for swapping anything. Building a 318is clone isn't hard. Nothing 'special' was done per se, there's justs tuff omitted - radios sometimes, insulation, etc. Body panels are the same. People swapping M3's though, now that bothers me. At least put a real motorsports engine in it, not these fucking S52 bullshits.Comment

Never fails for some loonbat to argue that the m42 makes an e30 as quick as an m20.
Yeah you walked him bro....Back to my roots
