I had so many cars without a sunroof; every time I got in, I always wished it had one. Slicktops are only cool/desirable if your car is a dedicated track car or if you just want one for the heck of it

Yeah but how many late 318iS slicktops actually become dedicated track cars?

Id probably rather have a slick top than a crank sunroof but a working power sunroof is nice

True. But that doesn't change the fact that they are way more desirable than sunroof cars. It's true for a lot of BMWs, rich people buying them new want all the options and fancy shit, then people buying them many years later want them to be as simple and lightweight as possible. It's a lot of reasons too.. less susceptible to rust, less weight at the highest spot of the car, leaks, less crap to break...
Same thing even with ones like e46 m3, the slicktops are pretty rare so they are worth more now. Same thing with older 911s from the 90s too. and i'm sure many other cars.

no.. they aren't. if they were more desireable, people would have bought them that way.

There is some flawed logic in that thought Who wants an automatic e30 now

never understood why anyone thinks a non-sunroof car is worth more????? (BTW, I have a non-sunroof car too.)
2nd, I never understood the logic behind a question like the op's! the color and year making an E30 rare??? an E30 is an e30, year doesn't make it rare, maybe facelif/VFL.

Talking about these cheap cars like they are Hemi Mopars or Yenko Camaros...wtf?

The fact is no one got the 318iS JUST because of the slicktop...at least not back then. In the US, if you wanted a 325 or M3, it came with a sunroof whether you liked it or not. Engine swaps change everything because now a 318iS slicktop can be just as fast if not better with an engine swap. So the whole "because racecar" mentality comes into play also.

As for the disadvantages of having a sunroof, of which there are a few mentioned in this thread I guess it depends on how you look at it. I hardly use my sunroof but I like having it. It doesn't leak because it's adjusted properly, the seal is fresh, drains are clear and I have yet to encounter any leaks. Because heat rises...it does an excellent job at venting the interior. Same thing goes for pop out windows. You may hardly use them or think they are unnecessary until you need them, then it's like...damn that's nice. It's probably been a while since you rode in the back of an E30 but these things are useful in a warmer climate, where it might not rain as much. I remember being about 10 years old waiting for my mom in the car while she went grocery shopping. The interior got hot really fast and I couldn't get out because the door was double locked and had power windows. I discovered the usefulness of vented windows that day. =]

I liked that car because of the slick top . In fact if it didn't have that I wouldn't of bought it .i was about to walk away until I saw the roof.

Not having to deal with wind noise and leaks is pretty nice IMO.

For having what, almost 300k on just the body being in New England it's ENTIRE life, it's gonna need that stuff. You can get it all done in a weekend tho .

No they wouldn't have because a lot of people in the market for e30s now are looking for different things in an e30 than the people who bought them new. The demographic buying e30s now is very different than the one that bought them new. E30M3 is a good example of this too, they were really poor sellers when they were new and now they are highly sought after and current prices reflect that. Same with slicktops. Did you read anything that you just quoted?
