My 318is is the only m42 I have ever driven so I don't know how it compares to other 318is's but I know that mine is not much slower, in the straights, than a 325is, if not faster. 100lbs more up front is a big deal not to mention for m42 people needing the 260 and other things that weight more. It doesn't seem much at first but it adds up. I DON'T THINK ITS WORTH IT....end of story....I know my 318is is slower than this "weekend" car and it will be even after I turbo my car but I think my car is more fun than it could ever hope to be. 318is' IMHO more fun to drive then 325is....thats why I bought a 318is. anyway I am done....this is crazy.

I guess people will always hate on the m42

BTW less weight = better stoping, cornering and acceleration than a heavier car w/ the same susp, brakes & power

Aww.. Come on now asu.. no one is hating on the M42. It's just.... well... a friend once explained it to me like this. You have Reebok and Nike. They are both good shoes it's just that Nike is better than Reebok even though Reebok makes good shoes they're just not as good as Nike's but they are better than.. say.. KSwiss.

In all honesty you sound like one of those guys that when he buys a car it's ALWAYS the perfect car even if everyone else is faster you always find a way to explain how you car is superior.. that is.. of course.. until you buy a another car to replace it. ;)

If I recall, the M42 powered 318's were tested faster than stock eta's by road and track back in the day...

well look at me, I drive an eta. Everyone thinks its slow and will always be slow. 318is would be a fun car, and for daily use it would probably be what i'd want. The m42 is a good engine, while it lacks some of the power, it is reliable and runs well. Ive driven an m42 powered car, but its got an auto, and more weight, definetly not my choice for a sporty car. Ive also ridden in a 318is e30 and it is a pretty good car. Slower than my stock eta from a roll, and definetly slower now.

Everyone has their preferences, thats all.

If I remember correctly it goes something like this..

          S14 > M20B25 "i" > M42 > M20B27 "eta" > M10

Yes, now you understand all IS models were 5 speed right? Your auto M42 powered car must have been a late model 318i or an e36, which would really have an M44, not M42.

Besides the difficulty of FI, the M42 is a well done engine, mine still runs like a champ even though the rest of my car is falling apart.

Yes, I rememeber seeing it scaled out like that.

Ritalin kid pretty much got it right. I've beat E30 M3's on r-compounds, E36 M3's, and even a 911 at an autocross... that doesn't mean my car is faster or handles better than any of them, it just means I was a crazy motherfucker out there.

A 318iS should not hang with a manual 325i in a straight line unless the 325i is (1) auto (2) broken.

Of course.. if you actually do add some FI to the mix and do it right that chart would definately change in your favor.

And if you add FI to the 325i to make it fair, the margin of difference becomes even greater on the 325i's end.

I'm not very familiar with how well the M42 and the M20 respond to FI Digitalwave but I just want to make sure I understand your comment right. If a M42 and a M20 both had the same amount of FI the M20 would leap ahead of the M42?

Oh yes, it's also a lot cheaper and easier to turbo an M20.

I know this is starting to get a little more OT but what about supercharging a M20?
