1. I'm always wary of new paint on a car for sale. Look for signs of rust and/or body filler. You never know what the seller might be trying to hide. Also, don't overlook incomplete trim/accessory re-installation. A lot of cars with fresh paint jobs have missing trim, seals and/or wipers, etc. It's tempting to look past that and think, "I can throw that stuff on." This is a sign of laziness by the seller. If they can't install wipers or trim pieces, what would that tell you about the stuff you can't see?
2. Needs a new driveshaft and axle?! Ask yourself what went wrong that those two parts are in need of replacement. Then realize that you can't take it for a test drive. You have no way of knowing if the clutch, transmission, brakes, suspension and/or differential are toast.
Sounds like someone else's project, which they gave up on for a reason. If that's the case, remember that no one will ever admit to incompetence. They will tell you that they need money, or that they have too many projects, or that their wife is making them allow more room in the driveway. What they won't tell you is that they are such a terrible mechanic that they lack the ability to find a driveshaft and half-shaft and install them.
Just some thoughts from my experience buying older cars. When in doubt, take pictures and post them here or, even better, take a local R3ver with you for an unbiased opinion.
Good luck.
