Buy the best one you can afford and enjoy it. Been fixing 2002s for 35 years! Too bad you are so far from Oregon. My kid has a decent 2002 for sale here.

Thats what windows are for, i only use the ac if i have passengers. How much is he selling it for?

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

if an old porsche, find a 70s 911 or 912. They're actually pretty cheap if there not one of the rare turbo or rs models or in pristine condition. There was a funny vid of clarkson trying to destroy a classic 911 on top gear, and he couldnt.. Ill post it if i can find it.

I was joking, but while we're at it, having owned and restored a 72 911, they are anything but cheap.

That's a great one. An 02 with an anemic engine due to it's worn out and having a 220 hp toyota riding your a$$.

He will take $1700. for it. Has Recaros, e30 weaves, Bilsteins, Weber 2 barrel. Almost zero rust, very straight panels. Good DD car. 1975 brown metallic, tan interior, no sunroof.

Would it make the drive to texas?

another popular mod is to pickup a e30 318i from 84-85. They have the M10 4cyl that has motronic fuel injection. Grab the head and manifold and sensors off it and you got yourself a way more reliable 02 on the cheeeep. Since you dont want a project car though this obviously isnt the best avenue to persue.

Like was already said. You are going to spend $ no matter what...spend it on something you LIKE.

Although I had some small issues with my DD 2002 while owning it, I didnt have anything really major. I think most people are expecting perfection. If its a DD who cares about rust ect. Just find one with decent seats and a decent engine and you are set.

Also as mentioned a square will be much easier to pick up and by my experience usually in better condition. Its funny how most of the people who actually own and drive 2002s arent bashing them.....

I wanted one up until the start of '05. My mechanic had gone on for years and years about if there ever was a track, his driving prowess combined with his light and nimble 02 would embarass my young hot-head with a torquey i6.

He droned on for about 5 years, and in less than a minute of me on our first ever autox, he quickly learned that his 02 aint all that :P.

I only beat him by about 10 seconds (on a minute long course)

Are there any known problems that might not let the car go that far? No. But attempting a 2,000 mile trip in any unknown old car is a risk. But, that's what makes life exciting. ROAD TRIP!
