Also -- I meant to ask this, but neglected to -- why can a cage not pass through the firewall? Wouldn't a cage that connects to the shocktowers be safer?

I believe that is because it makes the chassis more rigid and is an advantage over a cage that doesn't connect to the shocktowers.

Why is irrelevant the rules may give you a why but if they don't you still have to adhere to them to race. Supports passing through the firewall are against both NASA and SCCA rules for vehicles in competition.

          NASA CCR-

          15.6.2 Intent
Chassis stiffening is a side benefit of a good roll cage system, but it is not the intent of these rules. Parts of the
cage deemed by the Chief Scrutineer, to serve no practical purpose other than chassis stiffening may be
considered in violation of the intent of these rules
. (Note: Some class rules allow for chassis stiffening.) The
Chief Scrutineer may order the removal of said parts, or require that the vehicle owner redesign, reconstruct,
and re-certify the roll cage if warranted. The removal or redesign of the cage, whole or in part, to comply with
these rules, does not imply that penalties will not be issued for violating the intent of these rules.

          15.6.13 Mounting Points
The roll cage shall be mounted to the floor area, which includes rocker panels, of the car in six, seven, or eight
points. The cage shall not go through the firewall. The seventh and eighth points must attach to the firewall or
front fender wells. All cage attachment points must be mounted to plates or a mounting box (plinth). Each
required cage bar shall terminate on a plate with a 360 degree weld to the mounting plate, except as specified
in Section 15.6.14.B. There shall be only one (1) mounting “point” per plate. This point is defined as where the
“required tube” mounts. All additional tubes mounted to that plate must be mounted as close to the required
45 tube as possible [Ref: (15.6.14.B)]. It is recommended that plinth boxes use a bottom support plate in cases
where the edges of the box may punch through the sheet metal.

SCCA-(nearly vintage rules version from a build I did in 2002 but I doubt they have removed this verbiage in updates since)

          18.2

          C. The forward part of the cage shall be mounted to the floor of
the vehicle. In addition, if the two optional braces referred to
in 18.2.1.B are utilized they shall be mounted, one on either
side, from the forward section of the cage to the firewall or
front fender wells (see GCR Section 18.2., Figure 1). No
braces shall pass through the front firewall.

Cliffs- You don't do ANY prep on a race car without first familiarizing yourself with the rules of the class you actually intend to race in. Something as simple as seam welding a panel that was originally spot welded during rust repair can change the class you are in in some organizations.

Just because you spent 3k on that cage does not mean its automatically worth that amount.

Mods do not equal increased value, despite what the stance guys and hipsters will tell you.

I know. I didn't build this cage. I bought this chassis as you see it when I didn't know better. Now, I have a Spec E30 that's fully legal.

Hence why I'm not asking 3k.

You need to make one of the craigslist adds where you insult the buyers and curse alot.

Talk about your ex-wife (sure, let them know that she is also your sister) and how you delivered your first child in the back seat. Make sure to include a picture of little ricky bobby as proof. Then tell them about the roll cage build and the fact that you used recycled space shuttle parts that fell off when it was flying over your house. Then tell them that you removed the engine for weight reduction, but you have since mounted two electrical rods on the roof (Like a fuckin cable car) and tell them they can connect them directly to the power lines running over the streets. Tell 'em Tesla aint got shit on this E30. Tell them that your wife/sister wants it off of the front lawn so you can make room for the newly purchased chevy chevette that you are going to turn into a drift car. And if all that doesn't sell them.....Make sure you emphasize that it has four tires and them bitches are fuckin ROUND. (people will go crazy for round tires!)

You follow these steps my friend.... and BAMM! you'll have bitches lined up at your front door beggin to give you the $$$.

How much does the caged shell weigh? Scrap goes for $180/ton around here. Sell it for a bit more than scrap. Sorry but its a used car shell, that's what its worth. I didn't even pay $1700 for my e30!

                          My2cents.

I'm looking for an e30 chasis for my HPDE track car.
I think your price is more than fair.

Reasons I didnt buy your car already:
                          1. It's far away and getting it back would cost money and effectively raises the price.
                          2. I still drive my track car to the track and with the drivers door cage is a bit too much for the street. (in retrospect, that section could be modified).

So as others have said, you have a race car with a cage that isn't legal in the common race series.

In the next couple of weeks if I strike out locally I may try to work something out with you. Until then, good luck.

That cage is only legal in GT and SP-

maybe advertising it as such will help find a buyer.
