I hate the new front end, it's disgusting. I like BMW's for that kidney grill design with everything starting from that area on the front of the car, and they mutilated it on the new 3 series.
I think a big mistake they made is that seam on the front, way up high on the front wheel arch. That killed the whole look and made it look very Japanese IMO.

What would you call the Z8 then? IMO thats about as retro as it gets.

Ok, the Z8 is a retro design but there is a huge difference between that and what is going on now at the American companies. The American companies are doing almost exact knock offs of the cars they are "paying homage to" very little is different between the new car and the old one in terms of styling. Look at the difference between the Z8 and the 507:

The Z8 takes cues from the 507 but isn't a modern replica of it like the Mustang, T-Bird, GT, or Charger are. Also, in my opinion there is a difference between the Z8 being retro and making the 3 series retro since the Z8 was a sort of "dream car", it could be a glance back at BMW's heritage but the 3 series is a staple of the brand and should represent what BMW is really about (technology, forward thinking). ok, enough out of me

the difference is that bmw doesnt "pay tribute" to its former models to boost crappy sales caused by inferior engineering and poor gas economy.

Very true. Historically and to this day Japs bite the style of the German cars for sure. They even did it with the last accord and the frumpy ass look of the 7er. What Im talking about is their general design direction that has gone more "dynamic" and "look-ay-me! Notice me!" design thats been traditional with "lesser" marques. but yes, the Japs without shame take oodles of styling cues from the Germans.

I know this fact, but he never got approval to do his other designs until now for some reason. Shit, in its time, the E36 almost didnt get approved THAT was too radical for them. Now its just another extreme that doesnt suit BMW well, IMO.

The body line flows off of the top of the headlight a lot better than the curve of the bottom of the headlight.

wow, there's a lot of people that hate BMW's new cars. i wasn't so sure at first, but it grew on me and now I like them a lot. this is the way styling is going nowadays so get over it people.

each styling evolution, these cars look better, and drive even better. I drive these cars everyday at work and know this. I bet that even if you hate the looks, you'll have a smile on your face by the time you're done driving it.

True story. That line runs the whole length of the front of the car. What you posted doesn't flow well with anything.

I think the new 3 series looks great. Same with the new Lexus IS.

                              This looks like an Accord

On this one the line is not there simply because that is where the bumper ends, it's there as a continuation of the line that goes across the bottom of the hood and the top of the headlights. It's not what your used to so it looks weird but really it makes more sense than having a random line off the bottom of the headlights.

by moving the line to the bottom you creat 2 very sharp creases in the fender to go around the light... creases at such an accute angle are hard to produce in the normal way fenders are made(in volume) and are also hard to fit around other panels(namely the light) in an assembly line...
