I'm going to echo what several other members are saying here. I'd price out the parts (used) and give the list to daddy. Be stern, but be kind still. His spouse fucked up your car, he/she needs to pay for it to be fixed, bottom line. Say that your list is least expensive and best way to solve the situation. Dad's paying the least amount of money, and won't have to worry about it after he gives you cash. Your fixing the car yourself which saves him money and lets you learn about your car.

You can also use an emotional appeal with this method. Unless Daddy was born with a silver spoon, he most likely had to buy his first car himself (Which I'm assuming you did) as well, so he knows how much it means to you. Talk about how you just want this whole thing to be over and the fastest way that can happen will be for him to pay cash. Get your friend to talk to his dad and convince him to do this.

If he doesn't give you $500 or so, he is a complete asshole and you should drag out the insurance as long as you can.

My friends mom backed into my volvo's fender, leaving a nice dent. I didn't expect anything and banged most of it out, but she stuffed $100 into my hand. Extra gas money is always nice.

$1300 as total or $1300 for repairs?

I do insurance totals for a living and we pay a lot more than that for late model e30s.

Did you ask him why HE wants the car? Just tell him you want him to fix it. It's YOUR car. I'm of the 'you break, you buy' philosophy. He's your friend's pop so I would cut him a break but would certainly press him to pay for the repairs. The car is drivable, right? Not totaled. So... I'd ask him to pay for the cost of the repairs and maybe cut him a SMALL break.

In the long run, make the decision you don't think you'll regret later on down the road. I would talk to your friend's parents and make sure everything is laid out on the table. Don't walk away grumbling and angry. Let them know what's up.

^too many variables, like region and condition, but likely double that in some cases.

See he was really starting to piss me off because he kept insisting that from a "private seller" these cars are worth $800, and $1800 at the dealership. I kept telling him that these are worth wayy more than that. I mean shit, you can't find a running car of any make for $800 unless the body is beat to all hell. But anyway, I called his insurance company but they were closed for the weekend, left a message so hopefully they will get back with me on Monday. I will try to see I can't get some parts priced out.. Man this is some shit, if I have to pay out of pocket to get this car back to it's former glory.

You will not. You are in the right, and you will come out on top, the only question is how long it will take.

Find as many comparables as you can within 500 miles of you. Print them out, and show the insurance, stop dealing with him altogether, he dug his grave unfortunately.

You can get all those parts used for a lot less than 1300. You get to keep your car and a little cash let over, and they dont have to go through insurance.

Also, a responsible man should pay for the damage if he does not want to involve insurance. You are not required to let insurance get involved and total it....

Interesting, seems as private sellers are asking for much more in your city, didn't even go by individual years, but the cheapest one is $2500. Show him your local private sellers...
