Again, I feel like we need to know what his endgame is here. I love my E36 rack, but for 80% of people the stock brakes work just fine. Same thing goes for suspension; I think my setup (M3 springs, Koni SAs) is perfect for a DD, but maybe he wants something more aggressive or more coilover...ey.

It should really go from most to least necessary. Engine and suspension work keeps the car working, so that should all exist in some form first. After that is a matter of preference.

if you want reliability leave the engine stock. Nothing worth doing to an m42 unless you really want boost, but then reliability goes out the window depending on how well you build it.

yeah, I have no idea where that is coming from exactly. it's not as bad as it looks. I just got moved in 3 months ago and only the really dark spot is mine.

                start old man rant:

take 500 Get your car back to reliable and fix anything that actually needs it, keep the rest back for when something else breaks.

<SAVE IT>. FUCKING SAVE IT. Take 2k and start an IRA, a 401k or some other form of savings for your future, if you have one already put it in that. and keep putting as much as you can into it every chance you get. the most important years for saving for your future is your 20's

take the remaining 500 and put it back in your savings or checking account and forget its there.

I like this - makes sense. But here's my enthusiast take on it.....

Spend just enough money to get all major systems in proper working order so it's safe to operate. Then spend some to attend a few auto-x or track day events. It's an investment to your 'continued education' of being a better than average driver.

Just trying to pass on some of the lessons I have learned when I was younger and didnt really have the disposable income to be putting in to a "fun car" and was very stupid with the choices I made when I did have a decent chuck of change like 3k Thats all

I can tell you what I did with $3K:

Suspension bushings, shocks, springs, brake rebuilds, random engine and transmission seals, Z3 rack conversion, upper strut bearings, fixed the door locks (new tumbler and fixed the central locking), key-less entry, fixed broken power windows, new alternator, dyed the interior, swapped dash out with a less cracked one, short shift kit (ZHP knob, Z3 shifter, etc.), E34 leather wrapped airbag wheel, new steering knuckle, new power antenna, skidplate, center support bearing, guibo, exhaust hanger, rear subframe bushings, shift boot, M50 injectors, power steering lines and reservoir, HVAC panel, LED trunk light kit, and a starter.
