      The m10 trans will NOT bolt up to the m42.

              If you just did the swap, why were assumptions needed? Swapping in an M42 in 2 hours? A weekend would be doable if you knew what you were doing, but it isn't any more a straight drop in swap than an M20, M30 or M50 is - you need the engine, mounts, gearbox, wiring, cooling system & prop shaft for any of these swaps (although you could use the M10 gearbox behind the M30 with an uprated clutch). You also need to fabricate a bracket for the coil pack.

              As to the OP - M10s can run for a long time with some blow by. As it's a daily, if it's still running ok & passing your emissions inspections I'd just leave it be.

                We were moving an M42 from a crashed track car to a new car. If you've taken an M42+transmission out and replaced it as many times as we have it takes very little time, and most could do it in a weekend. Clearly, you need all ancillaries for any swap, but couldn't you reuse the M10 driveshaft with any swap, or it is markedly different? The coil bracket was cut off of the old car, the only other change we had to make was the lower mount for the radiator. An M20, probably isn't much harder, an M30 requires a few non stock parts, and a bump in the firewall. With both of those you would probably want to change the rear diff too, not only because of the ratio, but to ensure longevity.

                It is still my opinion that an M42 would be the most appropriate non-M10 engine. Clearly another M10 would be fine.

                The new car only had an M10 fitment transmission, which was in the trunk. I just assumed that the G240s would be the same. I apologize to the OP for that error.

                  Fair enough... The G240 M10 driveshaft is different from the M42 driveshaft (despite both boxes being 240s they are actually quite different - different bell housing, different ratios in the box, different output flanges).

                    A few things to address - First, I'm still in HS and will have time over the summer to swap the car. Myself, after reading extensively about each swap, I am considering going 24v. Fuel mileage is on par with what I would like, along with the great increase in power compared to the M10. Is this a bad idea? Also, I'm not concerned about the added weight. Am I making a good decision?

                    As for the M10, I did a compression test today. The results were between 105-115, so something is definitely worn.

                      honestly cheapest and easiest thing to do I swap in another m10. They could be had for 200$ with a trans, probably running. Then if you break anything on that motor u still have a spare m10 for parts. Wait till you have the means to do a proper swap.

                          I vote M42. They're fun little engines and will feel pretty stout compared to an M10. You can find them cheap. Hell I just scrapped mine after pulling all the usable goods off since I couldn't find anyone to buy it.

                          Or you could go M50 for another fairly basic swap. Find a wrecked E36 325, pull the engine, trans, DS and dif out. Replace some gaskets, get an oil pan and engine mounts and do some wiring and you'll be set. I did my M50 for around $1500.
