    Plasti-dip to protect my dash?

Not sure if this is in the right section, but here goes.

At the moment, the dash on my vert is in immaculate condition, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Any thoughts if applying a nice coat of plasti-dip would help prevent further UV damage? I think if it was done right, it would look a lot better than a dash cover...

The car is garage kept, and doesn't spend much time in lots baking in the sun. When I do have to park it in the sun, I always use a sun shade. My wife is less careful about this, and will at times park the car with top down, so even if she used the shade, it's not going to be too effective.

If it would work, plasti-dip could be a good solution, while keeping the dash looking 'stock-ish'.

I've seen some posts about people using it to hide existing cracks, but nothing to for preventing them in the first place.

Don't bother suggesting I try to get my wife to put the top up / use the sun - shade more. It's not going to happen.

    Any thoughts?

To plastidip the dash you would have to remove it. At that point why not just get it recovered in leather, or flock it?

I like the look of flock'd dashes

It's fine now, so no need to go through the expense / effort of removal.

I'm pretty sure I can get a good finish without pulling the dash -- I'd just need to remove the steering wheel.

I don't think it would come out that well if you didn't remove the dash, you'd be spraying at quite a large angle to get full coverage up toward the windscreen.

I was planning on applying it with a small roller to give it a bit of texture... I'd have to test first to see if I could get into the crannies by the windshield... If it didn't work, I could just peel it off.

I guess what I'm really asking is if the Plasti-Dip will do a decent job protecting the original vinyl, or should I just get some kinda cover for the dash?

In my opinion, you are going to waste time and money.

Do it right or don't do it at all.

If you have a mint dash and want to protect it why in the hell would you want to spray some random shit over top of it?

get a sun shade and keep it clean. /thread

I agree that it should be done right or not at all.

Are you saying it would be a waste because it would look like crap, or because it wouldn't protect the dash?

I'm pretty sure I can get on there and have it look good. -- If I'm wrong, then I can peel the dip off the dash and look elsewhere. I'm cool with that risk.

I'm not sure that the plasti-dip will provide enough protection for the vinyl underneath. If the stuff doesn't have protective qualities, I won't try.

I want to keep my dash free of cracks, and I don't like the look of the dashcovers I've seen.

Pulling a perfectly good dash to recover it seems a bit like performing surgery before the patient is sick.

A clear finish design to give more protection, feel, and durablity to your leather products. Can be use on aniline, semi aniline and pigmented leathers. On aniline leathers you will be changing the leather to a semi aniline.

Or get their dye, coat it and put top coat on it if you want to restore it even more.

If your dash is in good shape now, I recommend a water based UV protectant such as 303 Aerospace Protectant (can be had at stores like NAPA). I also use a sunshade as much as possible and store the car indoors if possible. Definitely do NOT use armorall. Armorall is petroleum based and can actually accelerate aging.

That sounds like a terrible, terrible idea. If you have a mint dash, don't fucking spray paint it. That's just going to ruin it.

Plastic dip isn't exactly spray paint.

It's similar enough. And just because it says it'll rub off doesn't mean it will. Not without any damage.
