In 20 years I have seen the BMW scene grow exponentially. I still blame the e36 for this but it was a good thing for BMW. With these newer fans you will have a more diverse crowd, crossovers and individuals with different views.
Personally, what I can't stand is when people buy e30's just to whore them out. People who take, take, take from the community but have nothing to contribute or leave the scene soon after they have "built" their efamous car (with purists help, then have the nerve to mock them.) Then their friend's want to do the same because they think their being different but they are just part of the trend. They tend not to stick around so their cars just get passed around like a $2 hooker. So perhaps I care what they do because they are making the car popular again for the wrong reasons, imo. I remind myself that it's just a car and don't get too worked up about it but I can't help it if it's an M3.

I met a guy at a car show from Miami. He said down there you're not cool unless you drive a bagged VW and wear skinny jeans. Guess he wasn't kidding.

It effects me because when HE avoids all the shit in the road, if I'm behind him, I then have to avoid HIM while he crawls along at 2mph trying not to hit a manhole cover. If there's lots of traffic behind him, he's also holding up traffic. Lowering your car to the point that it's an inch off the ground is a safety hazard. It's not about what looks good or not. Not to mention, you're gonna have suspension geometry issues when you're that low.
There's a good reason that there's a minimum ride height, which I believe is somewhere around 4 inches. Don't know if it varies by state.

And no, I haven't driven a very low car. Because I want my car to function, and not have to worry about bottoming out on speedbumps, potholes, manhole covers, rail road crossings, etc. My car is for driving. For reference, I have H&R Race w/ all spring pads. I've never bottomed out anywhere. Ever. And NJ roads are fucking terrible.

To me this article is dumb, car culture is shifting, people need to accept that.

"When does the shift from building a car for yourself to building a car for Instagram fame occur?"

This is dumb. Even building a car for Instagram fame is building for yourself. It shows what kind of person is behind the wheel. A person who likes attention, plain and simple. Someone who throws $5k at wheels and $2.5k on air ride expresses who that person is just as much as a person who builds their car for function.

This guy gets it. And people have been doing things for fame since the beginning of time.

Dang it. I built my e30, drove it around for a few years, then stopped driving it, then sold it to a 16 year old South Orange County kid for $12k.

I should have worn skinny jeans and whore'd it out. I would have been the posterboy for #yoloswag420 e30s.

When it comes to the "Just let them build and enjoy their cars however they want" argument, I think the bewilderment that mature BMW drivers have about this, particularly e30 guys, is that the most obvious way to enjoy a car is by driving it, especially after having renewed and improved its performance. We're proud to own a machine we enjoy taking care of. It's simple.

So, when we look at the stance scene, I think what we see is less about people enjoying what they can do with their cars (making it look or perform a certain way) and more about the attention and how it elevates them over the rest of us artless mechanics. Stupid low cars aside, that really sums up the objection I have toward it. It's materialistic and superficial.

Now, I will be very clear and state that I think only very few Stance people truly have that "look at me!" mindset, but I do think it's in the back of the minds of a lot of guys when they daydream about what wheels they want, how low they can go, and whether or not they can afford to repaint their car. I could really care less about what they do with their cars, but I think they reasons for it shouldn't be so compromising. That's why I say "nonsense." I don't want to sound like a hater because I get that everybody has their own thing, but it seems like the stance scene is imbuing a lot of young (16-21ish) car modders with the idea that they have to impress people with "style" in order to feel like their car is worth anything or that they accomplished something.

When it comes to drifting, I just see a bunch of nice RWD cars getting smashed up. It's sad :-(

you sound like a 70 yr old woman, ive completely lost interest in this whole thread but i will say this, i can drive my car an inch off the ground, at speed limit, and not hold up traffic or bottom out.. and im from NJ so i deal with the same roads as you. Hell i avoid potholes and manhole covers in my stock 2013 silverado, its not good for your vehicle hitting that shit at any height

You know what I can't wait for? A day when the people who endlessly hate on low cars just so they stroke their egotistical cocks all shut the asshole they call a mouth. Lol cars that are really low are stupid though. Like there's a low that looks good and then trees a low that should be saved for the stance fags. Plus IMO when you lower a car that's built for performance so low that it can't even perform what's the point of having the car then? Idk that's just me and by no means am I a egotistical cock lol.

Until you get stuck on a speedbump.

I'm not saying you have to like it by any means but it's fucking retarded to, say, go into a thread labeled "MY STANCED E30" and then start commenting on how their car is so low you couldn't drive over a leaf. I mean what the hell are you gaining besides trying to make yourself superior to the owner in a blatant display of narcissism. It's not that bad here on r3v but if you go on /r/bmw... holy shit.
