    How Fubar'd?

Found out PO has been putting in wrong grade/octane for the past 10 years. No knocking or pinging though. Should I be concerned?

M20, yes. M42 recommends premium but my dad has put 87 in my car with no adverse affects.

If anything OP you'll get slightly better performance with a chip on 91 but I doubt anything's been damaged so far.

BMW recommends 91 RON, but most places around here have (RON+MON)/2, which is actually the AKI. Supposedly 91 RON equates to 87 AKI.

no.. BMW isn't going to put euro octane numbers in the US Owners manual. it's 91 AKI.

it's rather amazing how many people have never read an owners manual for their cars!

as far as the M20 I'm sure it's fine. dinan chips are pretty mild anyway.

I'ts been a while since I looked at the owner's manual, but from what I remember and the picture below your comment, I don't think you're correct on this one. It wouldn't matter which number BMW put in the manual as long as they specified is it's RON, MON, AKI, etc, and I remember it calling for 91 RON, which corresponds to roughly 87 AKI.

But I'll double check during lunch and put up a picture of my 89 vert's manual.

I put premium in my car for a decade til I learned. Made zero difference other than to my wallet. Note that the energy content is identical in all grades of normal pump gas. The difference is in its ability not to predetonate..in other words if it doesn't knock it's fine.
