Pnp tranny...how to tell if it's good or not

I'm in the midst of pulling out a getrag 260/6 tranny from an e32 m30 with about 175kmiles.


Now the cars been sitting forever.

The shifts are nice and smooth/notchy however the "fluidness" of the shift is very slow and sluggish.

Kinda like sticking a piece of rebar in wet cement. It's slow and not quick and crisp.

Could this simply be due to low/no/old fluid? Or would there likely be something internal, mechanical that would cause it to act in such a fashion.

I don't want to buy a tranny that needs a complete rebuild, nor do I want to waste my time and $ on something that'll end up being a paperweight.

Unless it is in the yard because the tranny blew, it's likely good. Stickiness could just be gummed up old fluid. Get it and maybe rinse the inside out with acetone, drain and refill with fluid.





As far as the transmission goes, your guess is as good as mine. ;)

Run it through the gears spinning the input shaft while feeling for gear chewing. All you can do really.
Oh, and drain a little fluid to see if it has metallic dust in it.

You can also wiggle the input shaft to determine how worn the input bearing is. This is a pretty good indicator of mileage but takes a little practice to make an educated estimation.

That's the deal with this tranny.

I did find out that it was the yard/beater car for awhile, so the tranny must if worked.

The underside is mad rusted. Which is why I suspect it's there in the 1st place.

Either way. $49 for a 260/6 is good, even if it does need a little work.

Not that one. But there is a cleanish looking b35 in tHat e32 from Gatineau. Cars rockers are shot, so is floor.

I'd snap up the engine if I knew the mileage. No docs or paperwork whatsoever.

Might have had GL5 in it and gummed up the synchros?

That ate 'em in one 2002 4- speed I tore apart.

Flush it with ATF for a couple of fills and see if it smooths out.
Around here, $50 is a very good deal, and worth the effort.
