Lol no. It's when you turn your key 90* instead of the usual 45* required for the central locking system to kick in. When you double lock nothing can unlock the door save for the key or tearing the door panels off from the inside. It's effectively bulletproof; noone will be able to (within reason) open your doors. It's also a double edged sword though... if your key breaks or if something happens to your locks, you're fucked.Comment

My double lock must not be working on my e30 because when I roll my window down and try it, I can pull on the knob and release the lock.
Which theoretically shouldn't happen right?Comment

no E30 has a neutral safety switch. but you wouldn't know that - just stick it in "D". ;)Comment

Nope. You shouldnt be able to pull it up. Thats why they say dont double lock people in the car.
I used to double lock all the time. Until my drivers side lock got to worn out. Too lazy to fix, so i always lock and unlock via the trunk, which surprises so many people. . . lol.Comment

watched some asshole kid look in the windows of my car last night for about 30 seconds at about 1am. He then ran across the street and jumped into a car idling with a bunch of dudes in it. Almost grabbed my bat.
Luckily I don't keep anything in my car for this very reason. Don't keep belongings in clear view!Comment

Double Lock?
My E28 535i has the double lock feature with central locking built into the driver's door. It works as described above:
Key turns left 45 degrees to unlock all doors, trunk, gas filler.
Key turns right 45 degrees to lock all above.
Key turns right 90 degrees to lock and deadbolt all doors. This means even if they break a window and try to pull up on the lock button, they cannot open the doors. The door lock solenoids won't allow the doors to unlock. unless the mechanism fails ... like RUFFLZ described. If it fails you can pull the button up. I have one failed solenoid, so I know this from personal experience. That said, the above 'double lock' method is good too, locked garages are more difficult to slip into.
Good luck with getting the door locks back into operation. Hope the idiots move on to a more attractive car like a Range Rover or Accord. And get caught.Andy says "Be Seen, and Not Hurt!"

Maybe that kid was just an enthusiast? I check out other people's cars all the time.
Also, a new lock set with keys is available from BMW for like $150. Includes door locks, trunk lock, ignition lock and I believe 2 keys.Comment

Maybe post a sign in your window at night? Something along the lines of:

I know about you and what you're attempting, so here's your fair warning that the police will be involved this time. How you do you know this notice is real and current? Because you're reading it, you stupid shits, and I'm watching you.Comment

Very interesting, I now want to get my drivers lock cylinder fixed, currently unlocks but not lock. I knew E36s had some similar feature, but not how it worked.sigpic

Worst idea ever. what any thieve sees in a sign like that is. "im not actually watching you, thats why this sign is up to scare you." they obviously already know the risks of stealing a car, the sign comes off as a challenge or a "i dare you" type of deal.Maybe post a sign in your window at night? I am so glad this thread showed up,
I am going for a hidden power switch, I have a bunch of wiring to do anyways, Any one have any thoughts on the best way?BTW,
I had my house broken into and they hit me again three days later during a remodel, so take the warning "be careful they might be back" seriously
The cops said they usually come back if the first time they don't get in or don't get it all.
