I've been out of the E30 game for about 2.5 years and now I'm back in it with a very familiar car... Two years ago I sold my running (and not much else) 91 318i to my friend's son (who was in a tight spot and needed basic transportation) for $500. Yesterday I got the call from my friend that the car "stopped working" and my hypothesis was correct; the timing chain snapped on the engine, taking most of the valves with it. I offered him $150 to buy the car back and his son took the deal.
This is not a nice car by any means. The body has dents, there is some rust in places, and it has generally been neglected for most of its life. The plan is to put in another M42 to get it running again, do some suspension work on it, and use it as an Auto-X toy for the summer.
While that is going on, the larger plan is to build an M50 to swap in the car, put in a roll cage, and have a fun and inexpensive Auto-X HPDE car. Another buddy of mine who is on this forum (02stu) is going to be adopting the car with me.
It feels good to once again say that I own an E30. Even if it is mostly a POS and doesn't run. This should be fun!
